TAKE ME SERIOUS IF YOU WANT, BUT ALL OF YOU SAY 90% OF THE TIME DEER COME FROM DOWN WIND CORRECT??? IF THIS IS SO THEN WHY DO YOU NOT HUNT CERTAIN SPOTS WITHOUT A CERTAIN WIND.. I LOOK AT IT LIKE THIS IF THE DEER IS GOING TO COME FROM THE DOWN WIND SIDE (SO IT CAN DETECT DANGER) THEN NO STAND IS PERFECT JUST MY THOUGHTS... OR AM I JUST OVER THINKING THIS

Over thinking... Also, yelling.... Deer will walk where they want to get to no matter the wind. The point of hunting the wind is that day you are in the stand the wind is not blowing to where there normal travel patters are.. For example: if deer walk south to north at your stand then do not hunt it when you have a north wind because it would be blowing your scent south into the deer.

If you ever hear somebody say, " deer always do this or always do that", then call bullchit immediately, because deer don't always do anything. In Alabama, deer don't always follow trails, they just wander thru the woods, and with our prevailing wind being NW, they would all end up in Missouri. LOL

If you watch green plots you want to be on the downwind side of the plot. Some of the plots we hunt we have been hunting for 15 or so years and deer have certain entrance points a lot of times.

From looking at my camera photos from the last few years and comparing the direction mature bucks travelled with the wind direction that day, most travelled either into the wind or they had a cross wind. The only time that theory was thrown out the window was during the rut.

I always just hunt the best location for the wind that day knowing that those deer that do not understand my plan may come in down wind of me and therefore reduce my chances at killing them. But if I have good wind and all involved knows their role, i have a better chance of going undetected.

I always try to cut the wind in half. If the deer come from down the mountain from me i want the wind blowing at a angle down the mountain so MY wind misses them BUT the are still walking into the wind. It's hard to do but it seems to be the most productive for me.

The prevailing wind part or the ending up in Missouri part?

You are correct. Also, hunt where if they are coming into the wind, some sort of natural feature makes them alter their path, even just a little bit. In mountainous terra, they CAN NOT always travel into the wind. There would be days on end that they would never leave their bed. Hunt the wind stuff works great out in the flat land and on TV.

Thiss^^^^ and the Missouri one smile. They can't always walk with the wind hitting them in the face. In the swamp they would be doing circles like a dog chasing his tail.

I've witnessed deer on numerous occasions (mainly mature does and bucks) walk with the wind. Then I've witnessed deer on the same days walk into the wind and cross wind... loco

I keep an eye on the wind forecast, but mainly climb as high as I can and smoke up with hardwood smoke prior to hunting.

These dang Alabama deer walk however they want to. I'd never get to hunt since the wind comes from all directions while on stand 90% of the time.

It really doesn't matter if deer are walking with the wind, across the wind, into the wind, or quartering the wind, as long as they are up wind of you.

I've been blown the last two weekends by deer to my north with a nw wind. You can hunt the wind but the thermals may give you hell doing it.

I hunt a small parcel within a 15K acre thicket. Deer come from any and every direction. If I had to worry about wind direction, I'd never go. Ive always said, if the wind is hitting me in the back, i'll just move to the other side of the tree. Boom, now I'm hunting the wind correctly, no? Just go and enjoy your time in the outdoors. thumbup

I tie a thread from a toboggan on a limb just above my head and I never recall a time that the thread pointed one direction the whole hunt, in fact most times it looks like a helicopter blade turning.
