My 8 year old daughter has a crickett 22 that she will shoot all day long and is deadly with it. I got her a superlight handi 243 and loaded her some 2600 fps loads, but no way will she shoot it. I make her use muffs every time on the 22 but she says the 243 is "just too loud". I've taken the recoil almost totally away, so what can I do to get her to shoot it? She will put the scope on the target but that's all. She loves hunting and wants to kill one this year.

Is there a published subsonic load for 243? That would take the bark out of it. Those short barreled handi rifles are loud. You might ease her into it that way.

Let her shoot it with a tennis ball on the muzzle a few times and see if that works

I never let Stephen shoot the 243 before he shot his deer. He has a chipmunk 22 and he shot it many times before the hunt and he never felt or heard the gun shooting the deer.

Use plugs and muffs along with a full length barrel. My belief is that most kids that claim the rifle kicks too much are really scared of the noise. Remember that they have not sustained the hearing loss that we have over the years ... Their ears are very sensitive.

I think it's more when she's ready she'll do it no matter what. Last year my 8 yr old daughter went from a 22 to 243 and killed 3 deer in no time at all. It just took her buddies killing them. Then it was on!

My son was turned off by how loud the Handi rifles are. They are pretty snappy too. Let her determine when she is ready.

Just give her time and don't rush it. Tell her it's fine and when she's ready to shoot the .243, you'll be more than happy to help her. Until then stick with the .22 and have fun.

I don't push her or get mad. I will just let her decide like y'all have said. If she can shoot that handi like this 22 they better look out.

She shouldnt shoot the 243 till its at a deer. Mine both shot .22s and thats it till their first deer. They both shot the .243 the first time on their first deer. They will never feel it or care at that point.

Actually my youngest one is gun shy now because I let her shoot the 243 twice last year and it wasnt hunting. She done so well killing her first one i thought she should "practice" some but it messed her up and I regret it. I hope I can get her back on a deer and she let it go but time will tell.

If you ever shoot a suppressed weapon you'll be spoiled. The kids would love it too. And now we can hunt with 'em in Alabama

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

haleyville al,
She will let you know when she's ready. My son was afraid he would hold on target but would not pull the trigger then one day we were on our way home. He said dad I want to shoot the deer gun. I went right then and put up a target. He aint quit since then

I actually shot a suppressed ar at my gunsmith's shop the other day. I've thought about having one put on my kids' rifle.

Whatever you do, don't hand her the gun right after the scope bust your face open. My grandfather did that the day after he bought my 260 then handed it to me with blood still running down his face. I didn't shoot it that day haha

My girl never knew about recoil or loudness of the bigger caliber. She killed her first last year and now is hooked.

Good luck

I let mine shoot 22 for a long time and then put a scope on it . After she got used to shooting with a scope I let her look down the scope on my BAR 308. The first time she shot it she flipped a 6 pt and the recoil didn't matter. She still lays it across a shooting rail or something when shooting it.

I know you said she didn't like the muzzle blast, so this may not apply, but I thought about this the other day.

My son is 6 and weights roughly 50lbs. He has a youth 243, but won't shoot it yet. He shoots the AR with confidence though. He said he is scared of the recoil on the 243, so I haven't pushed him. He can hunt with the AR till he is ready to shoot his rifle.

We as adults view the recoil on a 243 as almost non existent. I know I sighted his gun in the other day and thought about how nice it was shooting a little 243. However, I went to the Hawks recoil table and looked up some numbers. A 243 with a 7.5lb rifle and shooting 100 grain bullets produces around 9ftlbs of recoil. Say your child is 50 lbs and you are 250lbs. That is the equivalent of you shooting a 458 Win mag producing 45 lbs of recoil. Lets see a show of hands, how many of yall enjoy shooting a 458 win mag?

Now it may not be as simple as that little equation, but it puts it into perspective when little kids are shooting rifles.

I agree with everything above. Ear plugs under muffs, and don't push them. I think the less pressure you put on them, the more they are curious and want to shoot. .02

Pistol calibers in rifles can be subsonic. I've been dealing with this same issue with my wife. High powered rifles are pretty loud.
