Herniated my C4-C5 three years ago. Worst pain of my life for about 6 weeks. Felt like someone put a knife in my shoulder and cut my arm all the way down to my left pinkie. My surgeon wanted me to have fusion surgery. I decided to wait it out and see what happened. A couple months later I felt much better and could function again. Today, I am pain free and have no problems with it.

Herniated or ruptured discs suck! Stay hydrated and stretch often.

Sounds like the same kind of pain except mine in my lower back and the sharp, burning pain goes down my left leg. Doc said my days of jumping from airplanes is probably over.

Got 2. It sucks butt I've learned to deal with them for the past 2 years. Some days are tough. It's best to stay loose and be smart.

Really?

Have three herniated and two bulging. Some days just straight up suck. Epidural injections help with the pain a few months at a time. Battled with them for several years after an ATV accident.

Been there done that. Hurts like hell too. Dr. Troy Middleton in Mobile fixed me right up though. As long as I keep the weight down, all is good.

central ala,
Had 2 in my neck. Had surgery in May. Still some pain on rainy or cool days. In such pain I had to have relief. Was actually looking forward to the surgery for relief until in the operating room and they told me they were going to put a catheter in. HELL NAW!!!!!!!!!! You can't put a garden hose in a McDonalds straw without ripping something!! I'm still kinda partial to the little fellow. They agreed to go in and out while I was knocked out.

I don't know...been hurting for years. Played sports until in my 30's. lived hard and played rough. If I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.

Where did you have your procedure done? I wasn't tubed up, I had a breathing tube though. it does get better though, I don't have any pain anymore and it was about 5 months until 98% of the pain was gone

Mine was a sports injury that I waited ten years to get fixed.

central ala,
Dr. Rigsby in Montgomery at Jackson Hosp. did mine. I really don't know what all I had done because I just needed relief. They talk all that stuff I don't understand. I know he said it was really bad. Said I had 2 fusions, 2 disc replaced, 2 metal plates, and 8 screws. On a side note: This is my biggest reason a few years ago going to 20 gauges over 12 gauges. I love them now and wish I had done it sooner.

Buddy let me tell you what. I returned from Iraq in July of '08 and as opposed to going to Korea and changing MOS to 15T my back was killing me all the time and no matter how much I stretched and worked out nothing helped. So they started doing cat scans mri's turns out I had 4 herniated discs in my L to my S l3 l4 l5 s1 pain got worse and they just kept feeding me vicodin for the last year I was in the army so fast forward to now 5 years later. No surgeries only Injections every 5 months my Dr Barlow at st Vincent's in birmingham. Don't do the surgery unless you want to have another. My surgeon straight up told me that the technology isn't advance enough and that I wouldn't be able to pick up anything heavier than a milk jug for a year! My best advice is to get evaluated for a microdiscectomy. Look it up people in the military are doing it and being cleared off any profile in 30 days. Best of luck

I herniated L3-L4-L5 at St. Mere Eglise back in '95

Hurt like hell for a few years, went a few years with minimal trouble and then they kicked hard out into the sciatic nerve about 3 years ago. Wasn't sure I would make it through that one but finally pulled through.

I can't really relate it to one single incident. I've had back pain for several years but I just figured it was from some of physical aspects of job, or just getting old. I was running a few weeks ago and when I got to work my lower back got real tight I stood up to stretch and had a sharp pain shoot down my leg that felt like I been stabbed in the leg. I have a fairly tolerance to pain but, damn that chit hurt.

What are some of the possible treatments? So far the Dr has mentioned physical therapy and surgery.

That's the surgery the doc was talking about. If I have the fusion it's automatic med board. I'm to close to retirement to get out now.

Actually, there are lots of people who have herniated discs that never require surgery or have any future problems with them. Hopefully you will not have any issues with your fusion.

Herniated L5, had it done in '95. Was active duty.Surgery was at Maxwell AFB. During examinations Dr told me to either get it done now while on AD or she'd see me in the VA. Non combat related MOS so I was able to recover but still they gave me hell. Told me to either get back on full duty or medical board even though the surgeon had me on light/part time duty for 6 months. Was a nasty fight but was finally able to retire. Completely destroyed any positive attitudes I had about the military. My suggestion - wait about a year before retirement, get it done if you have to, them put in retirement papers. You're done as far as they are concerned anyway.

I over-heard a couple of fellahs talking one day....Physical Therapy with back surgery will help. AND, Physical Therapy WITHOUT back surgery will help. I'd definitely seek alternate options other than surgery with this being the last resort. Massage, Chiropractic Treatment, and Physical Therapy are among the first that I'd seek. Keep us posted.

Fell on my arse. Ruptured discs T10-T12 getting spinal chord compression. Some really bad days and some not so bad ones. I elected not to have surgery since the 2 I saw really suggested letting them fuse on their own. Apparently it was not a good surgery to have either based off of their opinion. The risks outweighed the gain, and that was going to be another surgery at some point.

I am just getting over the exact same thing you are going through. I have a server herniation of a disc in my L5 that was applying pressure on the sciatic nerve. The pain running down my left leg was so bad I could barely use it. I dealt with the pain for over 7 months that gradually got to the point where it had mentally and physically beat me down. I was like many on here that just wanted some relief. I tried the injections and they did nothing for me. After the pain meds in the shot wore off I was right back in pain a few hours later. When I learned the shots were not an option I started looking for the best back surgeon I could find. Dr. Woodall came highly recommend if I was going to pursue surgery. Thankfully he could not see me right away and my orthopaedic doctor set me up with some Physical Therapy that came highly recommended from some people in the know. My orthopaedic doctor had tried to get me to do PT several months earlier but I was hard head and didn’t have time. Well, with all the pain I was dealing with I was willing to do what I needed to do to get some relief. I started PT every other day with traction. Within a week I could tell I was getting better and within two weeks I could really tell a difference. I stuck with PT for 6 weeks and I am now 98% back to normal with my back. I have some minor pains every now and then. I can live with those if it keeps me from having surgery. I still do my exercises the PT therapist taught me every other day. So far so good!!

I still consulted with Dr. Woodall even though I was much better. He looked at my MRI and knew I was in pain prior to my PT. He was very surprised that PT was helping however, he said each person in different. He was the first surgeon I ever meet that wasn’t cut happy. He told me to continue with my PT and if needed him I knew where to find him. He also said no surgeon could ever make you like God did. His suggest to me was to consider all other means before surgery which I had done. Thankfully the last option worked for now.

My advice for you is to give PT at least 6 weeks before making a decision. If you are getting better stick with it even though you may be back to 100%. If you aren’t getting an relief from PT then try the injections. You might all so consider some steroid injections while your are doing PT. Those helped me short term but never combined the PT with the injections. Had I done so in the beginning I would have got better months earlier.

That’s my 2 cents.

I herniated two discs in my thoracic spine, between my shoulder blades, at work in January of 2012 and still deal with pain everyday. Some days are better than others but it is always there. I have since learned that thoracic herniations are a completely different animal compared to cervical or lumbar. Most times surgery isn't an option unless the herniation interferes with the part of the spinal cord that affects breathing or other bodily functions. The surgery is also extremely risky due to the fact that the disc has to be repaired from the front. It requires removing rib and entering behind your lung or entering through the chest wall which would be comparative to open heart surgery. I've done countless hours of physical therapy, epidurals, cold laser therapy and any other non surgical options you can imagine and still hurt every day.

If you have a healthy back be thankful and take care of it!

Saw the Doc yesterday and all went well. He didn't recommend surgery just yet but couldn't promise I wouldn't need it down the road. I have felt better the past several days and the pain shooting down my leg has stopped, which for me was much, much worse than my back anyway.

Damn ya'll I when I first read this post I didn't respond because mines been good for the last few years and I didn't want to jinx it. Sure enough last week I over did it rotating tires and tweaked mine. A week later I can barely walk. It usually heals up pretty quick if I just take it easy but it's sore as hell right now.

What do ya'll take over the counter to help?? Alieve feels like it's making it worse this time.

Thanks

Well after my last post I took a turn for the worst. Last Saturday morning I hurt so bad I went to the ER, they gave me a shot of morphine and some Valium. I have felt a little better the past few days. I saw my doc on Monday and he gave me some oral steroids that seem to help. I have PT scheduled but it doesn't start until December 10th unless they have a cancelation but thats part of dealing with tricare.
