I got volunteered to work on a laptop for an old friends grandmother. It's a dell latitude D510. The battery is bad so I took it out and solved that problem, but regardless of it in or out all I am getting is the boot screen when you can choose safe mode, so with networking, command prompt, last known good confit, and start normally..... Doesn't matter what you select it goes to the windows boot screen and back to the same black boot screen. Anyone have any ideas?

Hit TC in the back of the head with it then reboot it. If that doesn't work, it may be broken.
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

If it has a sticker with the original OS information on it, I'd try to get my hands on the software and completely reinstall it.
You can download a tool from microsoft that will let you make a bootable USB key. Also can download the OS specified on the laptop. Use them to make a bootable usb key to reinstall the OS.
Unless there is data that needed backed up, that's what I'd do.
I'm not near you, in fact I'm in Maryland this week, or I'd try to help you further.

Sounds like the drive is going bad. Do you have the operating system disk? If not try safemode with the command prompt and run chkdsk.

It has all the stickers, BUT I just noticed is a refurb machine. On the windows tag it has all the product key numbers and a big black X and a bold DO NOT USE at the bottom. Not sure what that is about.

Drive over to Granny's house. Pick her up and take her to the Apple Store. Have her select a MacBook and take her back home. You'll never have to go over there to work on a puter again.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Make sure there is not a cd in the drive. Lol, I already thought of that one too. I cussed one for an hour one time for a do pse in the drive. Checked boot sequence, ran diagnostics check and all checks out fine.
