First time hunting this afternoon. I thought I would carry a camera with me bow hunting.(photography is my second job and hobby) I had 6 come out today. First deer was 10 yards from me. I had a couple inside 20 yds. But a had a small 7 and a button buck entertaining me for 30 min. If I had shot first deer in I would have missed them in action. Never shot at any of them but to me getting to watch all these deer after many hours of building and planting plots I think sometimes just being able to have them this close and never being detected is a successful hunt, or maybe I am getting soft at my age. Do a lot of you guys let deer walk so you can just watch them?

Good stuff there man! I find myself watching more and shooting less these days also. I'll get an ol itchy finger every now and then, but like I said, it's less than ever before.

Awesome hunt bgarrett! I enjoy watching them myself! I'd say your hunt was most definitely a success!

Great pictures!
How do you keep the shutter from spooking deer at close range? I have a Nikon D3100 that I carry some but I'm sure I spook a doe at 30-40 yards with the sound of the camera shutter. Any suggestions?

Nice pics. I have hunted 3 evenings this year had deer in bow range each time and have yet to draw back. I learn more by watching than killing.

I usually have a kid with me. If I shoot it's going on the wall. No one but me eats the meat and it don't get cooked much. But I'd much rather see a kid shoot a doe or a good little 8 than me.

I too have become much more of a hunter than a shooter in the past few yrs. I could have shot probably somewhere around 40 last yr. Took one good 10 in January and I was done.
Haven't even been in a tree this yr, all of the does I am seeing around my hunting places have fawns with them that are 2-3 weeks old. No way I would shoot one right now on my places, esp with the very low densities I have.

I use a towel to cover camera, however I will not take a pic inside 20 yds. The big thing for me is knowing the noise will not run them off, but the slightest movement when they look up will get me busted.

I also do a lot of observation and heavy trail camming than shooting. Unless it's thinning the doe population some and removing the "mutt" bucks I do more QDMA than anything regarding "if it's brown, it's down" theory.

Nice excursion and pics you embarked on.
