I let my kids shoot what pleases them, unless it's a little 40-50lb yearling, but they've learned that momma won't be too far behind those. My son has never killed a buck, but he passed on a nice 2.5 yr old 8pt last year. He asked if he could shoot it, so I asked what he was waiting for...ha!! But, he did impress me when he said he'd be a real nice one next year and let him walk. He did inform me that he will not pass up another nice 8pt this year like he did last year. grin He's 13 and killed 3 does last year. My daughter is 12 and killed 2 does and missed a spike. I killed a nice 8 that’s hanging on the wall now.

Still trying to get my wife her first deer. This will be her second year of really hunting. I'd put her in a jam up spot that I saw deer each time I sat it. I would get her set up, show her where they should come from and at what time, and then I'd slip off on the other side of ridge or something if we weren’t hunting together. I would be the one that saw deer and her nothing!! She would get so pissed. grin

I mainly hunt for all them once the rifles start firing off. I'll hunt and pattern deer during the week on my off days, set up a ladder or blind, and slip them in on the weekends to seal the deal. Been working out pretty good that way. Well, except for the wife... Even if they don't get to shoot one, we usually see something over the weekend for us to video with our phones. My wife and son sit together when it’s all of us hunting and I get to watch all the videos of them being goofy while they were supposed to be hunting. They crack me up doing that, but it’s no wonder they rarely see anything sitting together. They have a good time and those memories are what it’s all about!

Looking forward to the upcoming season. We have so much fun in the woods. Hunt with an awesome group of people that focus on the kids and family. Couldn't ask for a better place to hunt. I know there's place out there with bigger and better deer, but there's always a price to pay. We got it too good the way it is and I don't see myself going anywhere else unless it changes. Been having a hard time getting some good bucks on camera this year. Got some great 2.5 yr old bucks, but nothing that I want to focus on for myself. We prefer the taste of does over bucks, so I won't shoot a buck unless I plan to put him on the wall, but that's just me.

Here's how that one played out:

It was 2cd week of Jan and I had been bowhunting for a few days without much luck. There was also a gun hunt that weekend so I had my rifle with me as well. Since I was struggling to see deer, I left the bow and took my rifle to slip along slowly in an area I hadn't hunted before and stalk hunt while I looked for sign that I might would want to come back to. Although there was no one parked close to where I was, I ended up bumping into two people that had come in from different directions and were close to the area I was headed. At this point it was getting late and I was a little frustrated so I headed back towards the boat to just finish out the afternoon close to the river bank where I knew no one was. To this point I had covered a good bit of ground and saw very little sign, so my hopes weren't very high. Once I got back and made my way down the bank about 100 yds it started getting a lot thicker. Once I got inside the thicket it was like someone turned on a switch and I started seeing a good bit of sign. I eased in another 75 yds or so and came upon a shallow pond inside the thicket that was about 30 yds across and about 50 yds long. Being it was not but about 45 minutes of light left, I just found a big oak set against where I could see along both edges of the pond.

I had only been setting for about 15 minutes when I heard something tearing thru the thicket headed in my direction. It turned out to be a spike chasing a doe hard and they busted out of the thicket, went straight across the pond about 30 steps from me and entered the thicket on the other side. I would not have shot him anyway, but they were gone before I even had a chance to get my gun up. I remember laughing and thinking to myself "what if that had of been a 10 point". About that time I heard a stick break in the thicket from where they had come from and a good buck busted out of the thicket at a dead run following the path of the other 2. This time I was ready (I thought) and squeezed as soon as I got him in the scope. I was surprised that he didn't fall, but just kept on at a dead run. I then followed up with two more shots and apparently the aim wasn't any better. Finally I knew I had one shot left and put the crosshairs on his nose just before he entered the thicket on the other side. When I squeezed he cut a complete flip head first. The bullet had went thru the center of both shoulders.

It all seemed to happen in very slow motion and I still don't know how I got off 4 shots with a bolt action on a deer at a dead run within an area about 30 yds wide.

She's beautiful buddy. Better get all the time in with her while she is this young because the days fly bye. Or at least mine has. It feels like just yesterday mine was born and she's almost 11 months.

Anybody get in the woods and do any looking around this weekend,I was at work planned on doing some scouting this evening but got called in tonight so i'm fixing to lay it down for a couple of hours. I will say one thing when I walked outside Saturday morning it felt like deer season. The blood got to pumping a little bit.

I went but, not to look around. I had a couple lockons to hang and check cameras. Have A few shooter bucks still hanging around. Just hope they show up opening weekend. And yea I got up early Saturday and first thing come to mind when I went outside was I sure would like to be 20 foot up a tree. But, unfortunately I got 3 more weeks.

Moodyc, the advice above is 100% true. Just ask Earl Pitts - he knows. Seems like yesterday I was bringing my first one home. Now they are 12 & 13. Don't know where the time went. Beautiful little girl you got there man!! Get ready for gray hair though. Those girls put it on ya!!

Pulled cameras yesterday afternoon and the deer were on their feet this weekend!!

Got a few spots that I'm getting consistent day time activity, so hopes are high that when I finally get to be up a tree I'll let one fly. Only down side is I'll be on nights first two weeks of bow season... Such is life though.

I went to my go to bow spot in the national forest today, and it nearly killed me. I've killed a lot of deer up there in that spot during bow season. A couple of years ago a storm came through and knocked down a lot of the hardwood but there were still a lot standing. The forest service made it a payment unit, they marked the trees along with the ones that are blown down they wanted cut in that area, and apparently it was more than I thought. Last year nothing had been cut when I went hunted up there, this year its gone all they left were a few seed trees. The only good thing about it now is you can set up and have a good rifle spot early in the year. I walked it over and the deer is still crossing it but I'm going to have to do some serious looking for a new west wind spot and find it pretty quick.

Yep, they've sure cut a LOT of timber on the NF over the past 3 years or so. Wiped out a few of my spots as well.

No doubt I thought the whole purpose of the national forest was to preserve nature, seems to me its becoming timberland for the gov't.
