I'm going to destin next week, and I plan on doing a little lite surf fishing from the beach. Since it's not snapper season, I will not be booking a charter. I have never tried it before and I'm not going to take it too seriously, just thought I would give it a try a couple mornings or afternoons to help the beer go down better. Can anyone give me advice on rigs, bait, etc. I'm only using 10 lbs test line and a spinning reel. People advised me not to use my bass rods in saltwater. I'm just looking to catch anything, it doesn't have to be something I can eat. Just get a little line pull. I thought about a small carolina rig with some sort of shrimp, squid or cutt bait. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Your bass rigs will be fine. Just be sure to rinse them off really well when you're finished. I use my Ambassadeur's all the time and have never had any problem with them. A spinning rig would be better though. Find some Gotcha jigs (also known as Jerk Jiggers). You can catch just about anything on them. They are available in plastic and steel tubing bodies with different color heads, about 2 to 3 inches long, with double treble hooks. Look for fish attacking bait fish on the surface and cast in the middle of the bait fish. If you really want to get out away from the surf, you may want to get a longer rod and bigger reel with slightly larger test line.

Good luck!

sounds like you got the right idea,we camped at Long Key state park a few years ago right on the beach and me my buddy sat there all night with our flipping sticks carolina rigging some shrimp and squid.we caught stingrays and sharks all night sitting in lawn chairs.Oh yeah try squid it stays on your hook better and sharks love it,I ended up catching one a little over 40#'s.
