Is there any reason why NOT to use WD-40 to clean the inside of a throttle body? Back in the 80's when I worked for my dad logging he used WD-40 to clean just about everything. I don't see why it couldn't be used on the inside of a throttle body, but I don't remember dad ever using WD-40 for that purpose.

What say ye, AlDeer mechanics???

Silicone will kill O2 sensors... guess what is in WD40. Silicone
Plus, WD40 will attract and hold dirt, defeating the purpose of cleaning the TB.

CRC makes a throttle body/intake cleaner. Plus, at $5 a can, it's probably cheaper than WD40. Check Oriellys, Autozone, or Walmart for it

Get a can of carb and choke cleaner. If there is a lot of build up, use a old tooth brush to scrub it.

Ya'll realize that wd40 (water displacement formal 40) was designed as neither a cleaner nor lubricant right? Works great for displacing water though. But that's about it.

Wrong!grinIt's designed to clean and loosen(lubricate)those dirty bolts!..It was originally designed to prevent corrosion & as a water repellent..

For todays pearl of wisdom,.....WD40 was developed by the military for use on missiles and rockets, first used on the Atlas rocket back in the early 50's I think. smile

We used carb cleaner and a tooth brush for years. We now just wipe them out with a shop rag soaked with throttle cleaner. Just about everything is drive by wire and you can kill a throttle body by letting cleaner run down the throttle shaft into a sensor. The cleaner we use today is crap compared to what we used a few years back, but it will take paint off.

Just picked up my car from the dealer for an oil change. They called and told me that I need to have the throttle body and injectors cleaned due to ethenol fuel. He then told me it cost $160 to do this. I'm pretty sure I can buy a can of throttle body cleaner and some good fuel injection cleaner for alot less than that.

Well I picked up a can of cleaner as recommended, pulled the throttle body off and it was really dirty (2006 jodel SUV). I got it looking new, put everygthing back on, had pulled the fuses for 15+ minutes, then hooked the fuses back up. Car now idles perfectly. thumbup
