I grunt at deer that I see and want to get closer to me. I have better luck grunting in good bucks during bow season.

I use a Rod Benson grunt call, never leave home without it. I rarely blind call, I mostly use it when I see a buck and he's not coming my way. I use it to turn them and call them in for a shot on better look. Sometimes they come trotting, sometimes they come very slow, sometimes they stop and look then keep walking, sometimes they act as if they heard nothing. Like a box of chocolates , never know what you're gonna get.

I followed this advice last year, dead on and I love the way it adjust for different pitches.

I've had good....and no luck with them but very rarely have I scared one off using one..... I've killed several good bucks with "The Can"..... and all of them have showed up within minutes....none of which I could see when I used it.....I've used it with bucks in view and and they pay it no attention..... I've never had a buck come to any grunting....had a few does come looking for me but never a buck.... It's all what kinda mood the deer are in...

Here's a quick story about how grunting can work. I had a stand that I like to hunt opening day, I shot a buck there 4 opening days in a row. Well one of those was in a bachelor group. They came in but were just inside some really thick, nasty stuff and I could see them pretty good but it was too thick for a shot. So I gave a couple of toots on the Rod Benson and the biggest one about ran up my gun barrel. He can on a string at a very fast trot. Shot him almost straight down, he fell about 6 feet from the tree I was in. I think he was the dominate buck of the bunch and wanted to show his buddies and the new guy he was boss.

Linky to pic. Mine is black smile I think they make wooden ones as well. I had one for 20 years and wore it out. Ordered a new one a couple years ago from a store in Mich. Eagle Outfitters I think.

is that thing about the size of a cassette tape and has a wheel that looks like a paddle wheel on a gristmill that runs against a plastic reed? I used to play with one like that as a toy at hunting camp way back when I was a kid

I don't like to leave home without a call. I've had success at different times but my most notable was opening weekend of bow season. Once I called in a little 6pt. He was coming right to me and started walking away and then hit it again and a good 8pt come up the side of the hill. Ended up not getting a shoot on either. Next year opening weekend called in a smaller 7pt and let it walk.

Lohman Game Calls was the manufacturer, but they don't make them anymore. The sound it makes is a courtship grunt, most hunters don't associate the sound with a deer.

You know some people say they work some say they don't. I've had success and failure with them. It all depends on how you use it and what type of mood the deer are in. Once had a buck answer my grunt with his own and he wouldn't shut up till he searched every ounce of the field I was hunting. Unfortunately it wasn't the deer I'd been after. Also grunted when I've had deer in sight and they acted like they never heard it.

I grunt all season long. I've had very good luck grunting during bow season.
