If you use liquid casting plaster and are in soft sand you can get away with it. But after it sets up you cant let it get wet.

plaster with an acrylic polymer bonding agent mixed in will work. Yeh, I've done it, but its a bigger chore than you realize. The reason metal works so well is because it sets fast without bleeding through the pores in the soil, it kind of cauterizes the sand granules. Next time I do it, I'll probably use metal cause its easier. One thing though, even around here ant colonies are a lot deeper than you think. I've dug through some that are over two meters deep and several meter across.
