If we disced and tilled a field today, should we spray to kill anything else that will come back. What's the easiest way to smooth everything out a rid it of the cut roots and grass?

Don't have to spray over the dirt. The roots being turned up will eliminate the rest with time. If you are not planting for a while and have grass come back you can spray or disk again, just depends how you intend on planting.

Regardless of what responses you get, this is the truth:
You CAN NOT smooth out dirt that has grass and roots in it. Not possible. You can waste a whole lot of fuel and time trying, but you CAN NOT smooth it out. Not with a tractor, not with a dozer, not with a land plane. Rolling a cultipacker over it will mash some of it down but it won't smooth it up.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Those perfectly tilled, all dirt no grass clumps, food plots are only on TV as far as my experience. All the clumps has never really hurt the performance of our plots.

So if I don't remove it how is the best way to plant? I want it to get good ground contact. Thought about pulling it all off to one in with a blade.

Don't do that, you'll remove the best, most fertile layer of soil. Spread the seed, then cut it lightly with a disk. Don't try to drag something over it like chain link fence or a section harrow or you'll be digging grass clumps out of it for a month. I promise the deer won't care if the plot is lumpy. Keep it simple, this ain't rocket surgery.

LEAVE IT LIKE IT IS..... IT IS GOOD ORGANIC MATTER WHICH WILL HELP THE PLOT IN TIME.. SPREAD THE SEED AND DRAG OVER IT WITH A PIECE OF CHAIN LINK FENCE...

Rule of thumb for covering seed is 4x the diameter of the seed. I don't cover or even drag over clover seed. Today I planted a half acre of Rape and just left it on top. Any rain that I get will cover it enough to germinate and grow. Same way I planted my Rape last year.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I love hunting websites. Although this may be the first time I have gotten two different responses between ALDeer and TNDeer. What do you all think would grow best on that slope? The rest of the fields are farmed in winter wheat. Field is roughly 180 yards long by 20 wide.

Those guys are trying to get fields in now to have a huntable green patch soon. I bushog and spray a week or so later. Then last week of Sept go back and disc and plant just before a rain. I like those roots to shrink up for a few weeks before cutting the ground it seems to make it easier.

That is our Tn land. Only thing is we don't bow hunt that area so plan to plant it in about three weeks to be ready for MZL.

I agree with all the above statements about leaving it. Good natural stuff in there. what we find "pretty" is not the same for deer. I've never been crawling through a nasty tangled thicket and said to myself "man its nice in here" but old buck nasty sure thinks so.

The smoothest you'll get fresh turned ground like that is to set your disc with the blades straight and run thru it reasonably fast.

I have a 6awg chain link drag with three tires tied on top of it and I could drag that And it would be as smooth as a baby's ass in about two passes.
