Guys, I just moved here from TN and joined a pretty large lease in Pickins County. Hunting the timber company land is new to me. There is only 14 members total and they claim to have some really nice bucks on it. Its 8 pt or better. Does anyone have an idea of what kinda deer this area produces or a hunt club makeup like this will probably produce. I spent a lot of money on this lease in hopes it turns out good. Thanks for any insight you guys have.

What part of Pickens County? What's the name of the club?

Depending on where your lease is located, Pickens can have some really nice bucks. I think typically the farther south you go the higher big buck potential you have.

If it's down around Carrollton aliceville area there's a ton of deer down there counted a 106 between the courthouse in Carrollton and Raleigh Ryan boat ramp on the Mississippi line one night last spring. Two of the biggest bucks I've ever seen were right past the courthouse that night

If that lease don't work out, there is a guy in Wilcox county that has a open slot in his club. Look in the land and lease forum, he may have it posted in there. grin

If the poachers and road hunters don't shoot all your deer you may get a shot at a nice buck.

Most places around the river have some nice bucks. I've lived in Pickens all my life and have seen some really nice bucks harvested.

Where in Tennessee did you hunt previously? That will dictate your expectations just as much as anything. For the most part Pickens county has some great areas but IMO it has went downhill in previous years. Still some great deer but more quantity than quality from what I've seen there compared to years ago.

It's near Maughan Rd., Gordo, AL.
I have never really had much luck in TN. I always hunted in KY because I could be there in an hour and 25min. I have never hunted south of Tennessee and was wondering if seeing a 130" buck on a 2500 acre lease in Pickens was to high of an expectation.

You're in Benevola. That's a pretty good area. Your land is on the Sipsey River, correct?

I grew up in Pickens and hunted their all my life. I have never killed a 130 but I've seen many that big and bigger come through the processing plant in Aliceville. Of course the rut is your best chance for a mature buck. The last week of Dec and first week of Jan should be the peak of the rut.

I think if you expect to kill a 130", you're going to be disappointed. Sure, it's possible, but I'd say less than 50/50.

The potential is greater for a nice buck west or south from Carrollton. I would give it a try but if I had a chance to get in a club in the above mentioned area of the county I'd do that.

I am just South east of Gordo. I occasionally get a pretty good deer on camera (maybe 120-130) but its very tough to see one during the season. I think for this area for a buck to get that big its pretty much a 5 yr old which is real tough to hunt. The bucks we've killed are around 110-118 and are prolly 3 or 4 yr olds. Body weights around 160-185.

Yes, that's correct. It runs through the property

We hunted property off Maughn Road a few years back. It was a Westervelt parcel that was right around 2500 acres. The quality depended on the club and pressure. We killed/ saw some nice bucks (some around 130"), while the club next door killed smaller bucks. I actually missed the biggest buck I've ever seen from a ladder stand on that property.
