Sq footage is bigger, high ceilings and such. New homes are much more efficient if built correctly with good materials than older homes. Heating/cooling units are waaaay more efficient as well. Mine is 22 years old and is "cheap operated".

Straight electric heat strips will spin a meter!
I would look at an option if possible! Ala Power will finance new equipment at 9.9% if you are in good standing with them. A new Heat Pump would help that meter big time and may even pay for its self???? If that is not possible, Propane space heaters would be next if it was safe to do so in you situation?

Good luck!

2500 square feet. $300 is the highest to date. Wife and kids home all day everyday and keep it pretty cool.

Women love vaulted ceilings, so does the power company. I had a 2200sq/ft split level house, with 2 units, and my bill never got over $250 in the summer and we kept it at 68 degrees. Large shade tree in front yard helped. We did not have vaulted ceilings.

Are these electricity and gas bills combined? I about shat my pants when I got a $230 electricity bill for our 3,300 square foot house built in 2010. Our gas bill is usually around $130 but that includes trash pickup and all that fun stuff.

Lectric only, my gas is minimal. Just water heater and dryer. We rarely run heat in the winter.

My power bill is $85 a month, every month. I'm on the averaged out plan like Sethjamtoe. It's that low because i work everyday and it's just me and the boy and a dog.

So will having to purchase propane in february...especially this past february! That was a hard bill to look at!! Our 3500 sq ft runs anywhere from $130 in march/april to $260 in july/aug/sep. That's electric only. We do have vaulted ceilings, but offset them with fans. Have a programable thermostat that maybe saved me 5-10%. I know i saw a difference at the end of the first year we had it.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Ok, this is a heating bill, not a cooling bill. I'm going to say you have pure resistive heat, no heatpump. If you do have a heat pump, it ain't working.

That is a month of running heat solely on emergency heat strips.

I have 3 heat pumps and 2 pool pumps. One upstairs, one main floor and one basement. 3900 sq ft. We found some drafts and the contractor didn't caulk around the windows. On tops of windows you could see straight through. Power bill has been better now.
