I hear alot of people talking about their power bill when it gets hot. Either the insulation or craftsmanship of houses has taken a nose dive. I grew up in a house built in the late 70's and during the summer it stayed at 72 degrees. I never saw a power bill over 150$. My house was built in the early 70's and I keep the thermostat on 68 from 6-6, my largest power bill to date 134$. I think the older homes are more energy efficient compared to the new ones

My guess is square footage is the major determining factor.

Definitely one of the factors.... My house was built in 07...running two units and during the hottest part of the summer the bill might top out around $250 or so...the not so hot time of year it runs in the low to mid $100's..... It sits on 74 during the day when no one is here.... 70 when we hit the bed.....

The direction your houses faces, makes a big difference. Shade tree's make a big difference, and yea square footage makes a huge difference, as well as total load. Number of windows plays a big part. How many times someone goes in and out plays a part.

Insulation, windows, etc...all help.

our house is older and off the ground. All thats been upgraded except for AC unit. Has a 2.5 ton and needs a 4. Mine has gotten over $600 in the summer. I also need to add an attic fan bad, its 160 degrees plus up there sometimes.

Lots of factors determine the power bill. Kids, pets, insulation, trees, square footage, # of windows, how much you use lights, etc. After my dad got divorced we built him a 2500 sq ft house and his power bill never would get over $125. Single man, working all day, playing tennis most evenings, no pets and little light usage can really save.

Not sure what mine really peaks out at because I do the deal where they average out the bills over the entire year so you pretty much pay the same amount each month. I pay if I remember right about $240/month every month, summer and winter and everything in between. 2500sq/ft livable house built in 2011. 3.5 ton Carrier A/C unit. The house catches no shade all day long.

$150 in the 1970s was a huge amount.

My house started out with a little over 1300sq ft. I had huge power bills. I think back and I saw $350+ bills every month and realized I had very little of the cheap blown in grey insulation in the attic. I took a week off one summer and tore off all the lap siding and put R13 in all the outside walls and inside floors along with 2 layers of R25 in the attic. I covered it in vinyl siding because I ran out of time and money for the project. When I had to replace my roof right afterwards I had them put in a good ridge vent in and that was a major power bill break. I added onto the house and installed a 1 ton package unit just for the roughly 770+ sq. ft. and now I see bills around $200/month for all of it with the spread it out program they have how. Insulation was the key and the best money I ever spent.

Either that or he pays his bill every two months.

Ok, this is a heating bill, not a cooling bill. I'm going to say you have pure resistive heat, no heatpump. If you do have a heat pump, it ain't working.

That is a month of running heat solely on emergency heat strips.
