Skullworks, while the Libertarian in me agrees with your point, that hardline stance sometimes results in cutting your nose off to spite your face. Liberty is a hollow argument for 6th-8th graders having access to what anybody but a calloused fool would know to be immorality. If I reacted severely to a person fondling my 7th grade son, would I still be fascist? So in the same way protecting my 7th grade daughter from reading about abortions isn't fascist either. There is no right place to draw a line between all or nothing when personal liberty is the goal, but elementary kids and abortion are below that line wherever it is.

FFP, I did not read through the four pages, so I may have missed something. If I read your first post in this thread correctly, you wanted to pull a book off of the shelf in a library, because a girl's parents believed in God?

So a book is capable of mentally molesting someone? I feel confident enough in my son's upbringing that no book he read could corrupt the values and righteousness that has been instilled in him. If it was disturbing to him then I would expect him to not read it...but that is just me. The same..."I want to ban it or remove it because I don't agree with it" arguement is used against Christians daily. You can't have both ways. I do agree that there needs to be a happy medium but I still don't know who to give that power to.

Okay, let me say this. When my son was in Kindergarten, he brought home a book from the library at school dealing with slavery that we thought was not appropriate for his age. Not because of it being about slavery but, because it said someone made the little boy in the book drink alcohol or get beaten.

My wife and I didn't take it upon ourselves to decide what should be done with the book. But, we took our complaint to the librarian and the principle. After looking at the book, they both agreed and the book was removed.

I think the point some of you are missing is, there is a correct way to handle an issue like this and a wrong way. It it is not the place of an individual parent to determine what it appropriate for everyone.

"Both books were stripped from the inventory and will
be disposed of in whatever way the system dictates."

Scott...That is Fattys exact quote. How is what he done any different than what you and your wife done?Did he say anywhere that HE stripped the books from the inventory? His wife IS the librarian so im sure he consulted with her since she was there with him. From what i gather from his post is he did find the books..as a parent he thought they were inappropriate so he showed the librarian which happens to be his wife.Since its not Fattys job to pull the books from the inventory im sure his wife made the decision and as his quote says they will be disposed of WHATEVER WAY THE SYSTEM DICTATES...not the way FATTY dictates.Your putting words in his mouth saying HE stripped the books cause i see nowhere he said that..He only found them.

Yep. I keep thinking, "and this is a conservative forum of Alabama outdoorsmen". Just think what the left or even middle would be saying about this. Pitiful....

The scale of conservatism goes like this guys:
Least conservative- Democrat
More conservative- Republican
Most conservative- Libertarian
The Tea Party folks are Libertarian, and have you noticed how terrified both the Dems and Repubs are of them?? I'm not sure if those guys arguing against taking those books would label themselves "Libertarian", but that's PRECISELY the kind of thinking that is most conservative. The irony with your post Simpleman is that I think you have the best, most conservative tag line of any poster on this site. Liberty is the epitomy of it all...I make my OWN rules, I don't want the morality police to legislate for me. What these guys above are arguing for is liberty, not liberal immorality.

Not that I care one way or another since we live in the modern world. Geez who even uses libraries. But books should be read in there entirety, before a decision can be made. For all anyone knows the book was pro god and anti abortion. Even if wasntthe neither of which is what i would call smut for that age. But the man was just doing what he thought was right

Oh yea, what was the name of that book were the two girls got there daddy drunk and took turns raping him. And the slaves and brutal murders. You know about that guy from Nazareth

And the reason this country is going to chit. Is were arguing about library books and b***hing on the internet about about whats wrong with society. And half of them is marching and protesting in the street. And the other half is rioting and burning down the city. Wonder which side is gonna win

I hear you Brother, but your not in middle school...that's my issue with the books. They have no place there.
