Ive got a nice recurve but wanting to build a long bow, Ive never shot one and hear good things. I was thinking of getting either a hickory or osage orange stave ordered thats been seasoned, any thoughts?
What about red oak also?
i found a series of building videos by a master bowyer and think I can easily do it with all the tools I have if I just take my time and start out with the right material.

Red oak will break. I think Osage and Hickory would be the choices in this part of the country.

i'd say go with hickory first. much easier to shave, much straighter grain. all kinds of info on the 'net. got a draw knife and spoke shaves?

can't work hickory in humid summer weather, it will take a set. Cool weather work only.
osage is bullet proof, just have to work it different.

I think you will need aged and dried osage for the best bow. That's what my buddy in Ohio uses, he makes all of his own bows.

Check out Tradgang.com. Might be some bowyers in your area.
