I have no experience with the Proso variety but I'd be willing to bet you can still attract some birds with it by cutting and raking or burning it. Even if it falls to the ground, they won't get it all while the plant is left standing. Doves like clean, bare ground where they can see predators approaching. They also don't have feet made for scratching. If you clear the ground before the opener, they'll find the leftover seed.
