I took a vacation day today and stayed home to load up some of my cattle to send to Livingston Stockyards this morning.

I have an older gentleman that has hauled cattle for people in my area for the last 40 or 50 years and he came to pick them up.

I sent my Registered Purebred Black Simmental bull to the sale this morning. I sure hated to see him go. I have had cattle since 1982 and have owned several bulls through the years but this was the best bull I have ever owned.

I bought this bull at the Beef Cattle Improvement Association (BCIA) Bull test sale back in December 2009 in Cullman, Alabama. He was on test there and consigned to the sale at the end of the bull test by Mr. William Mayfield of Centreville, Alabama. William owns Triple M Simmental Farms in Centreville. This bull that I bought there won the Simmental test division that year.

He has been a top notch producer for me, was as gentle as a lamb and a pretty bull to lay your eyes on. So, it was kind of hard to watch him leave on that trailer this morning. That's the bitter part. frown

For the first time ever I decided to keep a group of very nice heifers from this bulls last year calf crop so I just had to let him go. He is turning 6 years old in September, I did not want him breeding his daughters and he really didn't have the EPD's for using on heifers.

He also had gotten big. Mr. James Shaw, my cattle hauling buddy told me this morning he was going to top 2000 lbs. He guessed him to weigh 2200-2300 lbs.

Cattle prices are at all time highs. Slaughter bulls have been bringing very good money. If that trend holds out for me today when he goes through the sale ring, combined with his weight, he ought to bring some very good money. Hopefully, that's the sweet part. grin

Along about December or January I am going to be in need of a new bull. I am looking for a black hided bull that will be okay to put on this group of heifers and my momma cows. I want either a pure blood Simmental, a pure blood angus or a percentage bull such as a Simm-Angus.

Ideally, I want a bull around 12-16 months old. Preferably about 14 months old.

Any of you cattle guys here that can share a lead with me please do so. It would be appreciated.

I know the feeling all to well. Not sure how far Montgomery is from you, but Mike Henry own Pintlala cattle company. He has some fine stock, and is a great guy in my opinion. Its fixin to be bull selling time. That time if year.

My uncle had a bull like that Cuz. When it came time for him to be replaced they sectioned off an area of pasture and put him in it. He lived out his days there..They just couldn't sell him off.

Mike would be a good option. You may also want to contact Chuck Madaris with CK Cattle in Hope Hull. I can send their contact or it is in the Alabama Cattleman magazine if you are a member of the Cattleman's Association.

If you are looking for a replacement Semmintal Bull you definitely need to talk to Harrell Watts in Sardis, AL who owns Simmentals of Alabama.

I have a contact for good black and black baldy Simmental bulls if you want to go back with Simmental. I'll have to find the guys name and number so let me know if you're interested.

Didn't he have a few "good" years left? Couldn't you have sold him to someone else for breeding?

I could be wrong on the name but I think we have a bull from Triple S Cattle in Southside. We have changed 2-3 bulls recently so I don't really recall which ones dad kept and which ones he didn't.

If I had not kept his heifers he would probably have stayed here for another year or two. But, cattle prices are so high right now that I decided to keep my heifers for replacement cows as I know how good they are.

Why sell good heifers that I know the breeding on and pay premium prices for someone else's stock for my replacements?

Not many folks in the market for a 6 year old, over 2000 lb. bull that is mainly a cow only brood bull.

My next encounter with him may be at Hardee's. grin

Look up "Next Step Cattle Company". They will have a bull sale around the 1st of December in Auburn.
