Someone to prepare your food plots or do any other tractor work for you? I am really contemplating the idea of getting a new piece of equipment. It's pretty costly and I can't justify it without picking up some extra work on the side to help me pay for it. I was just trying to get a feel for the level of demand before I decide to move forward.

If you're currently paying someone to do this type of work, do you mind telling me what rate you pay? I'm not looking to do this for a living, just trying to gauge whether the equipment can pay for itself if I only work weekends.

The best thing we ever did as far as I am concerned. The 2 of us that owned tractors did all the planting and bush hogging . We had to plant when we could get everyone together. Now we pay a farmer. It gets done when the weather and the ground is right. I still do soil samples and decide what to plant and how much fertilizer to spread, but now everyone pays the same and nobody gets over worked.

I know a guy that does food plots, seed, disc and all. I thought he was charging too much the last time he did mine, but he said the last year on somebody else's land, that he hit some lightered snags and tore up two rear tires. Almost all his profit was gone for the year.

Its difficult to charge for that kinda thing. You have to bill people like something is going to get broken or damaged at every property in case it does. Otherwise you end up like the guy mentioned above

Ive done some side stuff with my tractor. Mainly bush hog work and driveway grading. I average $60 hour with a 2 hour minimum and dont go any farther than 15 miles from home.

Since I don't own any equipment I have to pay someone. He charges $50/hour.

Pay someone or rent. No way you can justify cost with what needs doing on a club. $40-$65 an hour depending on size of tractor and equipment. Just my 2 cents.

Year before last I paid a guy $50/h and the price of seed etc. I have the equipment, but finding time to get it to the club can sometimes be an issue.

Thanks for the responses. $50/hr seems to be a pretty common rate. What does that rate end up costing per acre? Conventional equipment requires multiple passes with discs, spreader, drag, etc. I am contemplating buying a unit that will do it all in one pass. This would potentially make my planting far more efficient than traditional methods. I am leaning towards charging by the acre. I think I could do this and still save folks money versus planting with traditional equipment.

I have a guy that tills up my fields. I like that better than a disc. He charges $50/hr as well. He bushogs then tills. He can do 4 fields that total about 4 1/2 acres and he does those in about 5 hours total. He also bushogs about a half mile grassy road beds in that time.

You gonna buy a unit just for this purpose?

If so, you need a 3-5 year window to show a profit/payoff debt carry.

Better talk to a whole lotta folks in dev counties, not just here

No. I'm contemplating buying this unit because I want it. I just can't justify the expense unless I get some side work to help pay for it. I'm not interested in turning significant profit. If the machine paid for itself I'd be tickled, but I fully expect it to take 5 years. I'm not trying to make a full time job out of this.

That's kinda what I said... Do you have a debt retirement plan with cash reserves to cover your initial sunk cost purchase, or have you factored the time value of money plus the interest rate you paid to purchase factoring in penalties for late pay and no pay,
In the event you can't find enough biz or diesel prices kill the demand for your service? Better believe a financing banker gonna Jack you on all these before he looks at your credit score... I been there friend and fuggem!!

I sure as heck can't justify my tractor/equipment but diesel fumes and dirt are in my blood. Nothing like tractor cab therapy. If you want it buy it. Have fun with it. I know my kids love being in the cab with me too. Don't try to just justify it on paper. There are other benefits to owning equipment.

I am not the only person that does food plotting but I have nearly 10 years worth of costs. The cost of doing it right would scare anyone. If you want any info let me know.

I do a little tractor work for local clubs. I usually swap work for hunting membership or turkey rights. Works for me but in all honesty, I get the short end of the stick. Too much at risk. But, like 257 said. You do it because you enjoy it, not to make any money at it. I probably have 75k worth of equipment out there at risk. My return for a weekends work much be a 1000 membership. I'll spend 2 days on equipment, over $100 on fuel. Plus transportation cost. S, if you want it, go for it. But, remember break downs are expensive.

I planted for a few clubs for free membership over the years, and the cost to maintain my equipment, & diesel fuel didn't justify my out of pocket cost. Don't get me wrong, I would help out when needed, but do not use my equipment towards membership anymore. I just pay my membership and leave the equipment at the house.
