I have a good size clear cut on my land that I wanted to go in this fall and rake out some small patches and plant something. I was thinking buck forage oats but would like suggestions

What are you gonna do with the clearcut? Are you gonna replant, let it lay out a year, or spray it? If you are gonna aerially spray it, then you might want to hold off on the planting.

Not sure. I am a member of a club and this is my section so I don't know what the timber co is going to do. It was clearcut a year ago and they left lots of pole pines (I can get up 50 feet in the middle of the cc if I want). I'm pretty sure they've done all they are going to do as far as timber prep.

My recommendation would be winter rye(grain not grass) and crimson clover. They work well together and will grow on poor soil without much prep work.

By the way, if you do go with oats, plant feed oats, they grow just as good, and cosy a LOT less.

A wheat and rye mix is hard to beat and both will just about sprout on concrete!

Hard to believe a timber company would leave the poles standing for that length of time, those are the money trees of most tracts. If you know the timber companies name you could post it and somebody on here might know a contact foresters name you could talk with to get the tracts future status.

I know a couple of people in Buckeye, and Butch Tucker lives about a mile up the road from me. It is a great club with a lot of deer. They have been killing some good ones the last few years. La Floresta is some of the best land in NWF as far as deer #'s go.

I would check with Butch before you plant, the club I was in up in La Floresta we were not allowed to plant anywhere there was not already a designated food plot per La Floresta. They are very cautious when it comes to their pines.

I would think Ross Price would be the one to ask.

Ross Price and Bill Jacobi are the ones who told our club we could not do it. We had a couple of guys planting in some pretty open select cuts and Ross and Bill put a quick stop to it.

Yeah, I am really pumped up about it. More than I wanted to spend on a club but, hey, you can't take it with you. Which club were you in Mason?

The problem they are having in that area is Cogon grass. They are trying everything to keep it from spreading but I think they are fighting a loosing battle. They don't want anyone disking up an area other than established foodplots because of this. I will talk to Butch and make sure what I am thinking about doing is OK.

in the clear cuts we planted we didn't turn the ground. most were 1-3 years old and still had bare ground and ruts around the edges from where they were replanted. We put a spreader on a four wheeler and went to spreading it around the edges. any cracks or crevices/ dozer tracks, tree row mounds etc would still be open enough to get wheat/oats and the clovers to grow in. with the reseeding, we would get about 2 years out of it before the cutover got to thick.

The timber company that owns our club land sprayed most all of the cogongrass last year. They did a good job too. I say they got 95% of it. I've only seen a small little bit this year. We are gonna plant some patches in a 2 year old clear cut this year. Prolly go with oats/clover mix.

I was in River Pasture Sportsmans Club and Perdido River Still Hunt. Cogon grass is getting pretty bad up there, they contracted someone to come in and spray but didnt really put a dent in it since they didnt spray all of it.

The problem with planting a patch in a clear cut will be when they come in to replant with pines.
