I am considering getting a new scope for my sons ruger american 7mm-08. The nikon buckmasters he has now is not a bad scope but there have been a few times where he has had a hard time being comfortable with a shot in low light particularly in cover (like a clear cut). I am thinking about either a 2.5-10x42 Z3 or a 3-9x40 accupoint. Does anyone have any first hand experience with the accupoint and/or Z3 in these sizes? I am not looking for a telescope, just a quality, smallish, lightweight scope that will last.

I have a 4-12x50 Z3 and it has been a great scope.

I'm a z3 fan myself. Have a couple of them and a couple of accupoints. I hunt with the z3's.

I have a few of the Z3 3x10 scopes and they are very good. Get the 4A reticle not the duplex and it will become your favorite reticle.

Only downside to the Z3 scopes is the eye relief is a little short compared to other scopes. But I've had them mounted on some pretty hard kicking guns and have never had one hit my brow.

Had both-

The Trijicon caught me in forehead shooting a deer with a lightweight 308.

Now I know why, checkout the eye relief below. For this reason the Trijicon is hard pass especially for a kid gun.

I loved everything about the Trijicon except the eye relief. The swaro does have better glass than the Trijicon but either will get you last legal shooting light since the law changed.

I'd look at the Leupold VX5 2.5-10x42. That's what I went with last year when I was looking and I picked it over the Z3.
