The only time Gatlinburg is tolerable is if you go in an "off peak" time of the year AND you go M-Th.
And that's really a shame, because that is one of my favorite places on earth (The park, specifically, but Gatlinburg is the most convenient area to stay, relative to the park, if it's not super busy)

I will second the idea of going when it’s not peak season. I will add to plan any event downtown or around crowds during the week. Huge difference between a week day and a weekend day

Going to Dollywood next Thursday and Friday. I hate the traffic, but my kids love the rides at Dollywood. I’ll take that place a million times over Disney. Dollywood is great. My favorite amusement park by far but not in the heat of the Summer tourist season. Winter and the Holiday season is the time to go, except Thanksgiving and the next few days.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

went there for New Years, never again, place just isn't made for Holiday weeks lol. We went between Christmas and News Year last December. It was miserable. Only good thing was the weather. I wore shorts the whole time. Some locals told us they call it Hell Week. They said it's the busiest time of the year.

I got married there on December 28th, 2005…….I have never seen such crowds.

Theres just way too many humans on earth these days. And people, in general, are making more money. I didnt see many vehicles that cost less than 45k. Saw a dang lot of Tesla's but no charging stations.

Two places I never go - Gatlinburg and Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. Why people think these are the only two places to go on a little vacation...I will never understand. I would go to Gadsden before I go to Gatlinburg. Both places are great if you go at the correct time which is when everyone else is not going to be there. A lot of this is dependant on school calendars. Then like someone already pointed out, the SMNP is wonderful, free and has plenty of places to avoid crowds.

We got tired of the crowds and went to Blue Ridge Ga. Enjoyed it a lot more than gatlinburg. 🤫 We started going there too, instead of Gatlinburg. Way better

Good point... my kids are grown and gone so maybe a good option for me and the wife offseason. I just remember all these people walking around 20 years ago and traffic was insane. I said nay.. this aint for me. And there was no nightlife back then..no place to take the wife out.

The only real redeeming quality about the town itself is its proximity to the park. It is probably the most centrally located town to most of the most popular places within GSMNP...that's also why it's so incredibly busy. Go in a non-peak time of year, try to be there Sun-Thur and leave on a Friday if possible. Spend the days inside the park and then get dinner in town and maybe walk around for a bit and look at all the weirdos (there will be no shortage)...The people watching is about all there is "to do" unless you're into cheesy "moonshine" places or tourist traps like Ripleys Believe it or Not....that stuff ain't for me. We get up, grab some breakfast, then head into the park for the day.
