I saw some commercials advertising Gantlinburg the other day and I was like why are you spending money to attract more people? You can't handle what you have now.

The only time Gatlinburg is tolerable is if you go in an "off peak" time of the year AND you go M-Th.

And that's really a shame, because that is one of my favorite places on earth (The park, specifically, but Gatlinburg is the most convenient area to stay, relative to the park, if it's not super busy)

Two places I never go - Gatlinburg and Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. Why people think these are the only two places to go on a little vacation...I will never understand. I would go to Gadsden before I go to Gatlinburg.

I will second the idea of going when it’s not peak season. I will add to plan any event downtown or around crowds during the week. Huge difference between a week day and a weekend day

Dollywood is great. My favorite amusement park by far but not in the heat of the Summer tourist season. Winter and the Holiday season is the time to go, except Thanksgiving and the next few days.

I have a boat load of Friends who think Gatlinburg and Gulf Shores are the only 2 vacation spots in the world. They have been going there every year for 20 to 30 plus years. Go once, get the airbrush shirt that says Billy Joe loves Louise and be done with it. Especially Gatlinburg.. Gulf Shores is ok but the water, food, shopping, fishing, nightlife, kids fun stuff, is way better in Panama City Beach. And if you think PCB is all wild and crazy... it aint. Especially when compared to the 90s.

We went between Christmas and News Year last December. It was miserable. Only good thing was the weather. I wore shorts the whole time. Some locals told us they call it Hell Week. They said it's the busiest time of the year.

This is the truth. I got married there on December 28th, 2005…….I have never seen such crowds.

Theres just way too many humans on earth these days. And people, in general, are making more money, i guess. 30yrs ago, there were way less people and a much lower percentage of those people vacationed regularly.

Both places are great if you go at the correct time which is when everyone else is not going to be there. A lot of this is dependant on school calendars. Then like someone already pointed out, the SMNP is wonderful, free and has plenty of places to avoid crowds.

Average new vehicle price is $47,000 and new car payment $700 per month.

Good point... my kids are grown and gone so maybe a good option for me and the wife offseason. I just remember all these people walking around 20 years ago and traffic was insane. I said nay.. this aint for me. And there was no nightlife back then..no place to take the wife out.

If you're going to Gatlinburg for "nightlife", you're doing it wrong. The only real redeeming quality about the town itself is its proximity to the park. It is probably the most centrally located town to most of the most popular places within GSMNP...that's also why it's so incredibly busy. Go in a non-peak time of year, try to be there Sun-Thur and leave on a Friday if possible. Spend the days inside the park and then get dinner in town and maybe walk around for a bit and look at all the weirdos (there will be no shortage)...The people watching is about all there is "to do" unless you're into cheesy "moonshine" places or tourist traps like Ripleys Believe it or Not....that stuff ain't for me. We get up, grab some breakfast, then head into the park for the day.
