Good thing that didn't ignite! Wonder if they have an automatic shutoff valve along that pipe that cuts off the flow when there is a sudden drop in pressure?

Lot of pressure on that line. Could have ended very badly.

We called 811 digging drainage around my house. Stayed 3 foot off their zones and still hit a gas main into my meter from the road. Had to evacuate and everything. Sounds like you hit the your service line. Most services have a efv ( excessive flow valve) on them and usually stop blowing once hit.

They are about useless. I call them all the time to mark utilities on projects I work on and rarely anyone ever shows up. Good luck getting anything located on Marshall County. They are the worst by far. Agreed...I've had stuff marked days after they showed up and still be off...I've learned the ol branch method meanwhile depending on circumstances

I hit a plastic gas line grinding a stump once. I reckon the tree must have grown its stump around the line. Scared the crap out of me. It was whistling pretty good. The whole place smelled like natural gas or propane, whatever it was. It leaked for quite a while before someone got there to fix it. I thought for sure it would blow up. Natural

I got a large oak tree on the border between the city easement line and my place right next to a city sewer man-hole. The city engineer and I both agreed that it is going to be a headache to get the tree taken care of. If there is a bad storm and the tree goes over, so does the man-hole.

Is that a propane line? I know natural gas operates at much lower pressures but not sure what the main line pressure is on either. All my pipeline experience involves liquids lol.
Residential Nat gas lines definitely have a safety/check valve. The line was NOT where it was supposed to be.

They hardly ever come , took them a week and a half to mark a job with underground power for me after much hounding . Call them all the time and they rarely come . You can also put in a request online now instead of calling .
