Were you referred to this specialist by your regular vet? If so, I would definitely tell them about what happened. They need to know and they may be able to help resolve the issue.

My father was a Veterinarian and while it was obviously an honest mistake, the doctor should have informed you right away of what happened and why. There is no excuse for not informing you of what happened. Fortunately, I think this person is in the minority and most Vets are great folks who genuinely care for the animals and owners they help.

Not sure how much the surgery cost but you can always sue in small claims court and let a Judge determine if compensation is appropriate. I bet they would agree to reduce or remove your payment rather than go to court.

When I was a kid if one of my dogs got ran over dad just took him for a ride in the pasture and put him down with a .22, he didn’t see any sense in spending a ton of money on an animal. I don’t have a dog now but I’d imagine I’d be the same way.

Folks spend a lot of money on their pets.

Pet resorts are real and a growing cash cow business.

I have several really good friends that are vets and your story is out of character of any vet I know or have known. I’d be mad too. Hopefully you can resolve it.

Those emergency clinics are expensive. My lab broke a toenail while in Arkansas and was flopping, bleeding and painful. My vet friend tried to get me to yank it off while holding him down. I drove to an emergency clinic and they wanted $600 plus. I drove to Memphis and my buddy took care of it at his clinic.

No way I'd pay them for operating on the wrong leg. Did they operate on the broke leg or just the goodun?

I asked the same and haven’t gotten an answer. If they did operate on the good leg and fix it, you really don’t have a case. I’m not saying I wouldn’t be pissed as well if they did that to my Golden retriever because I know how special these animals are. I spoke with the wife about it and just going off what she was saying. They should have said it to you immediately as that isn’t professional at all.

I had a client with a very similar situation, we both made money.

The vet mentioned briefly over the phone after he told us all the good about the surgery. It wasn’t until we picked him up and realized the cut was a lot bigger than he said and the dog wasn’t using the good leg. We looked in the chart they sent home with us that had all the notes in it and that wasn’t mentioned. That’s when my wife got mad like they were trying to hide the mistake.

Vet killed a dog of mine once that I’d literally been offered a blank check for. I was so pissed I decided I’d be better off not ever seeing the vet again in any setting.

Why I don’t trust vets with the exception of two country vets. At least most good country vets will just tell you to put it down and save the money. These new age vets ain’t got a clue. Cheaper ways of dealing with those issues and you just blame yourself and move on.

Don't be shy. Speak out. I'm sorry your dog got stitches on a good leg. The stitches will heal. Hopefully the damaged leg will too. I can't speak for them. Wasn't there. Don't know them. All I know is what I read right here. And was 100% honest on how it read. If they fixed the bad leg, they don't owe you for the mistake. Maybe a discount on the repair, but that's it. Attorney is over the top. Find a new vet. Hopefully they don't make mistakes.

Gonna leave this here...... Probably more than just stiches in the skin...... Bones are usually a little deeper in most areas of the extremity. Go to your kitchen and get you a big knife and cut all the way to your femur about mid thigh, then go get some stitches. You will be good as new......

That’s the way I see it too. The “right” (honorable) thing to do would be to offer a discount. If they don’t, that would say a lot about their character to me and I’d just find another vet. Good luck to y’all and the dog on a quick recovery.

When did Fido become as important as a family member. All of my dogs were great family pets but none of them were worth any one time vet bill over $1000 or much less suing the vet over.

Where did anyone say Fido was more important than a family member? What I or anyone else chooses to spend on their pets isn't really anyone else's concern. I tend to like my dogs more than most people I run into on a daily basis.
