2006 Tundra
120k miles
V-8

I just bought the truck recently from a dealer and have no idea what oil was used in it.

Would you use full synthetic or not?

I have a 2006 Highlander with the V6 and use full synthetic. I'm at 356,000 miles so apparently something is working right.

I've got a 2011 4Runner with 225k miles that I've only used synthetic in. Still runs like showroom new and never had a single engine issue including sensors.

2011 Sequoia I've used synthetic in since I got it in '14. I have the dreaded tower cam leak that isn't bad enough to fix, yet (for $3-4k top end tear down), so I've switched to conventional to help tamper the leaking.

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I use full synthetic in my 2005. The dealer says they don't recommend that for some reason.

I also used it in my 2002 model, which now has 378K miles on it. I just converted it over to regular oil, because I don't drive it that much.

Don't think '06 Toyotas required synthetic. It's worth a Google.

Check that, google says 5w-30 synthetic.

I've practically forgotten that they still make conventional oil.

Back in the day when I cared about Nascar, the Toyota teams figured out that the engines wouldn't break in properly when they were filled with synthetic because it was so slick. They had many engine blow up in race. Basically it was too good. They had to break in engines with conventional and then run with synthetic.

In my mind that meant I should go with synthetic for maximum wear protection (I never deal with new engines) and never looked back.

I would definitely use oil.

Full Synthetic - I've had very good results in our vehicles.

Full synthetic is an awesome choice if only someone could make an oil filter that would live up to its potential or at least live long enough to justify the expense. They don’t, I’ve proven it repeatedly with oil samples over the years. I’ve got several service trucks between 3-400k that never had anything but castrol, not many gas burners other than service trucks carry 3 tons extra everywhere they go from birth to death. Use plain ole castrol 5w30 and keep on driving

What oil does the manual in the glove compartment say?

Wait... Let me look in your glove compartment for you...

Both engine options available in the 2006 Toyota Tundra use 5W30 synthetic formulated oil. The 4.0L V6 engine option takes 4.8 quarts and the 4.7L V8 needs 6.6 quarts worth.

I believe Rotella offers that viscosity in synthetic.
