When you all owned guns before they got stolen or fell out of your boats, how does one go about getting gun values for the sake of insuring them?

When I did values for a friend, the insurance lady asked me to quote what I thought their values were and she/we went with that.

Gun broker completed/sold ads WITH bids.

I asked my insurance guy about making sure mine were covered he said I needed to get them appraised. I asked him how I was supposed to do that and he said I could take them somewhere, he said woods n water would do it. That’s as far as I got no way I’m hauling all my stuff somewhere. The add on coverage without an appraisal don’t cover much on my policy.

You need to change insurance co.

Many years ago when I had guns I simply took inventory and carried the list to a gun shop. They priced them.

It is a problem to verify value of guns and other items, but if you ever have a problem you will wish 10 times over that you had a complete inventory and value . You still won't get all your cost back, but without it you may be lost. Take the time if you have a lot and keep the inventory in a safe place away from your items.

You will probably have to purchase a separate policy for them and it isn't cheap. Looked into getting one for my Wallpaper. Crazy high.......

When I shot skeet, I had a rider on my homeowners. It was pretty cheap actually. I just gave agent info and he added them on.

When I checked with my homeowners they cover up to 5K with no info, over 5K they want a list of the guns and values, reasonable values I put on them or purchase receipts etc.. I only have one gun in my boat and I am hesitate to give someone even insurance company a list with it on there.

The homeowners limitation on coverage of firearms is typically from theft. Each company is different. Some carriers like Safeco have no limitation on the coverage of theft. Otherwise you guns are contents just like your furniture and clothing.

BUT, don’t expect your home insurance underlying coverage to pick up when you drop your duck gun out of the boat to the bottom of the lake or you run over your rifle with a truck or ATV tire. If you have them insured under a personal articles floater they carry a separate deductible which is usually $0 and covered from loss. Does not mater if it was stollen from you truck, damaged on an airline or a horse rolls over on it in the scabbard and busts it up. Cost is $10 per every 1000 in coverage. Cheap

I will be carrying a separate rider, but the company wants to know the values of the guns and scopes.

I was going to put a rider on my homeowners for all my guns. Then I decided I didn’t like the idea of them having a list of what I had and all the serial numbers. I trust my local agent and his staff but what about some anti gun nut in a corporate office somewhere? Wasn’t comfortable with that. Maybe stupid but…
