If the job was just adding shutoff valves to begin with, I’d have done the same thing. The spraying leak is what caused me to call him because I couldn’t figure out where the water was coming from. The shutoff valves was just an added thing I asked him to do since he would be buying parts.

I’m surprised that passed inspection in Shelby county. They’re hardcore.

Mike, you’ve offered to pay and I’d let it be. I would also go get some valves and replace myself.

This only pertains to completed work, but I've done small jobs for friends, and couldn't justify giving a bill. Especially, if it's someone with alot of mutual gratuity. I'd rather them forget it.

Sounds like he fixed the original problem, just hasn't come back to put some shutoff valves on. I'd just hire another plumber to come do the shutoff valves and if he ever brings it up again tell him you got another place to come out. I'm sure he will say you don't owe him anything for the original fix.

Call and tell him you want to pay for what has already been done and get that part taken care of now. Then you will pay for other work when it is done. If he still can't give you an amount then I would just get the rest done by someone else or do it yourself and rest easy and not worry about the bill. If he ever gets you a biil then pay, otherwise no worries.

Let him know you don’t want to owe him so you are sending him a check now since it’s been so long and need to know what to make it out for. Let him know if he doesn’t give you a number then you will send him your best guess so that you are all squared away. Oh and make sure you document and have a paper trail just incase

I had an AC repair guy do that - we tried to pay him multiple times - I like to pay what I owe

Odd

This thread prompted me to call the AC guy - finally just got him - he said he had not forgot me and he has a switch he was supposed to put in for us too and he said he still gone do it and finally charge us for that and original work

Feel better

I’m usually the same way but this was an emergency thing. The builder didn’t put shut off valves on the toilet or the sink. The flush mechanism inside the tank cracked with age and started leaking pretty bad. Like, spraying. The only thing I could do was shut the water off to the whole house. It was a weekend and at night. He was the only one that surprisingly answered, so I didn’t have much choice. To answer what someone asked above, this is his business. I’m definitely wanting to pay him and have asked him several times to tell me what I owe. He has just never given me a price.

I wouldn't worry about it . He wants his money he'll come get it .

Get some body else to finish the job .

He’s a friend. He probably isn’t going to charge you for what he’s already done AND certainly NOT ASHAMED for not installing the cutoff valves that someone else omitted. The cutoff valves weren’t an emergency but the “real bad toilet leak” needed emergency attention. Be thankful you have a friend that was willing to put off someone else and come take care of his friend.

I thought you were going to say “My friend came over to work on my plumbing 8 months ago and now my wife is due to have a baby in 4 weeks.”
Now that, my friend, is a worse situation than what you got….
