That's what I plant in the little field by the creek in front of my house. I mix in sun flowers and a few few rows of corn too. I watch deer several times a week.

Tried to plant some last year as a screen. Planted strips about 10' wide and about 50 yards long and nothing ever came up. Broadcast the seed, lightly disced it in and then ran a cultipacker over it. Got the seed from petcher seeds. Needless to say I wasn't very impressed with the results.

I’ve never heard of anyone failing a stand of sunn hemp.

What’s the height restriction? Sawtooth oak will get tall eventually. Just FYI as seeing it mentioned.

Don't blame me for your bad decision-

First time i planted any, it was too cool. It didnt do well. I planted about 1/2acre two years ago. I swear every seed had sprouted and was up in a couple days. Deer around here wont leave it alone. Weeds the deer wouldnt eat ended up overtaking it. This year im gona mix it with ic peas in hopes it might hide from the deer till it gets a little growth on it.

Well yea I’ve had deer wipe it out when finger high. That’s not a stand failure due to germ tho. That’s on my deer herd. And petcher seed is a reliable good standing seed grower. He won’t send out bad seed. I’ve done enough business with him I know better

Deer are different everywhere. We planted sunn hemp 2 years ago. It was mid to late August before they hit it. Once they did it didn't make it another inch. It made it to about 4 feet tall before it disappeared.

Maybe I’m picturing wrong, but I thought this was a hillside kinda natural area. Just want some maintenance free cover to hold the world together and maybe some green. Sounds like most are picturing a flat backyard garden area or something.

If you had just borrowed $100k for a machine to make a living with, $1600/day might sound more reasonable. I would imagine if you saw the amount of work you were getting for the $1600 you would be satisfied. It does sound high up front but all things considered, its probably pretty fair

Yeah... Thinking about that too. "Parklike" Yeah... That would be ideal.

Ideally I could step out on the upper deck in my jammies with my Winchester 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine that hangs above my side of the bed and fill the freezer one morning.

No.. Sawtooth Oak is out.

I actually thought of some dwarf fruit trees, but damn... That would be an orchard, and just something else I would need to tend to in retirement.

You're right. It's still going to have some pretty large oak and hickory over most of it, but there's also going to be some fairly open areas. So I'm going to need some kind of ground cover.

Over on the Canyon side, there is a pretty common grass that grows up all around here. It only seems to grow about 12" tall. It's all over the place. I don't know what it is, but that stuff would be ideal.

Looking at the guy's truck, trailer and machine, he probably needs $1600 a day just to make payments. grin

May be a dumb question but here goes:

The places I have seen where they use a forestry mulcher, when they are done there is a coating of mulch covering the ground. I am guessing this would need to be removed if you are planting seed???

My other thought is, once done it sounds like the location would be susceptible to runoff and something to hold the soil would be critical initially. Maybe some millet?

There is also gonna be a big demand for nitrogen to balance out the decomposition of all of that wood mulch......
