Before I order on line I am checking to see if any one has any equipment they would like to sale. My oldest turns 21 in a few weeks and wanted to do something memorable for it. We have watched to many shows on the Discovery Channel together!

If you get one online, go with at least a 5 gal

Cool. I'd be interested to hear what you get and how you go about it. I always wanted to learn distilling just to say I know how.

I’m a long time customer of this company. I and everybody I talk with recommends at least an 8 gallon pot so you can use an entire 5 gallon bucket of mash. I went in thinking I wanted 5 gallons, but I didn’t figure in the over-run. You’ll be thankful later, believe me.

CALL and speak with a rep before you make a purchase from ANYBODY. He/She can hook you up for WAY LESS than $700 by mixing and matching every item you need and none of the stuff you don’t. For instance, I already had a good propane burner, but electric is MUCH EASIER TO BRING TO YOUR PRECISE TEMPERATURE. This enables you to know which top portion to dump out, because methanol (think deadly and blinding poison) and ethanol (the product you WANT to drink) Is a higher boiling temp and where you want to stay at to produce your product. Again, Methanol has a lower boiling point than Ethanol. The staff will explain all that so you can stay safe.

Let nothing other than stainless, brass and copper touch your distilled water. Water with impurities will kill a BMW cooling system so...

5 gallon stainless flat top pot with a hole for a cork/temp gauge and an out hole for the top of your tube. Medium paper clamps all the way around to hold the top on with a double layer of double thick ptfe sealant tape around the edge of your pot under the top.

Some distance away from it should be a 3 gallon bucket with a sealed up outlet at the bottom. Run a water cooling system to the bucket that picks up from the bucket and runs back to the sink. I just run a tube in the top clamped to it and another out of the bottom siphoned - match the out with the flow of the in and you're golden. Some coils going down through the bucket with an outlet at the bottom.

Keep flour and water nearby to make a paste to seal holes/leaks. It will seal up tight when heat is involved and clean up right neat when not.

Keep your temps well under what water boils at. The chemical act of ripping an alcohol molecule from a water molecule is a violent and shady thing. The water REALLY does not want to let it go. The entire premise however is that alcohol will boil and release molecules into the air as steam at a lower temp than water. As long as you realize the first part that comes out is lower alcohols and will kill and blind - then yer fine. The first part will kill you, the last part tastes like shucks but won't hurt you.

I’m confident that all members of this site that are distilling do so to power their flex fuel vehicles and should be granted a tax incentive under the green new deal.

I would be leery of having anything related to distilling shipped to an AL address. It is legal to distill water without a permit and I believe methanol got alcohol motor fuel but I’m pretty sure you are required to register the still. You can legally distill ethanol for liquor, also, if you can afford it and get the ABC’s permission. Otherwise it is a felony.

It’s illegal to own a still in a dry county.
