So I've been stuck at the house with China flu and bought a gun online, a Winchester M70 SS 300 WSM.

Only bought it to use the action for a custom build.

Which should I build, a 6.5 SAUM or a 338 SAUM?

Your thoughts....

Between those two, I would likely pick the 6.5 SAUM.

I've wanted a 35 Sambar (35-300 WSM) for some time. I had a Savage 10 300 WSM a few years back that I wanted to make a 35 Sambar, let a guy talk me out of it though. Wish I would have kept that one, if it had been a model 16 stainless I would have.

Leave it alone. 300wsm is a good round.

Both would be awesome but think I'd go 338 SAUM. I guess it depends what you're trying to accomplish with it.

I don’t know enough about either round to offer an educated opinion but I know you’ve got .338cal covered from mild to extreme so I’d be leaning towards the 6.5SAUM. No love for the 6.5PRC?

Having said that, a short action .338 thumper would be pretty dang cool.

Since I know you love small tiny overbore calibers I'd go .338 or leave it alone. You might need a fast .30 someday.

Only hits count.

I have the 30 caliber pretty well covered...

308 Winchester
300 H&H magnum
300 Winchester Magnum (2 of them)
300 Weatherby magnum

grin

Not in a hurry on making a decision. Leaning to the 6.5 SAUM with a 24" fluted bull sporter set in a Manners MCS-T stock.

But I love the 338 bullets...

Sure, just design a reamer, call PT&G to make them and you can have a 358 SAUM. Or ask PT&G if someone has already designed one and copy that.

Kinda, it's called the 35 Sambar and it uses WSM brass. Dies, reamers and load data already available.

The .300 WSM is probably the best of the bunch. I would do 7 SAUM myself but there is really nothing you can build off it that is going to set anything on fire. .270 WSM was underrated IMO. They have some bullets coming out might get a justified second wind. To me the .300 and .270 WSM and the 7 SAUM.. those were the ones.

6.5 SAUM I've been shooting that since it was known as a .264 Rocket. Not sure I would go there because it really can't do anything the 6.5 PRC or 6.5x284 long action can't do.
