Found him hanging from his harness. Cut him down and tried to revive him while waiting on the paramedics. Sad thing, two college age kids and a wife left behind.

Dang that is tough right there. Prayers for the family.

Man oh man. What an awful way to find someone. I've been using a descender device every time I climb the past couple of years because of that kind of situation. May not have helped him, but who knows at this point. Prayers to the family

My sympathy goes out to the family. For sure that's too young to go.

dirkdaddy, I've also started using a descender device. Good idea.

terrible. this year I replaced my gun pullup rope with a heavy duty rope because ive thought about this same thing. its not perfect, its tied to the gun rest but in theory should be hanging down in reach if the top is still attached. they say you got 20mins from a hanging harness. prayers sent for our fellow hunting brothers family.

So sad. Tough loss for his family. Prayers lifted.

I think often about what I would do if I fall in my harness. For my lock ons, I use safety lines lined up next to the ladder sticks so I feel pretty confident I could get back on the ladder. In my climber, that's a little more tricky. If I can't get back in the climber, I keep a sharp knife in my harness pocket. My plan is to cut the strap and bear hug the tree down. Not ideal and I hope I never have to do it.

Prayers for all involved.

All we can do is inspect our gear and do what we know is right and safe. No short cuts. I hunt a lot by myself and am no spring chicken anymore, so I'd be lying if I said I don't think about how accidents can happen and the "what ifs" involved.

Be safe out there friends!

I've even thought about undoing the leg buckles and taking my chances dropping down. I think the most important thing would be not to panic and keep a level head.

I've also considered what I would do. Would the knife become a liability after cutting the strap? Could I unbuckle and drop without getting tangled? Honestly, unbuckling is probably something worth trying one day from a couple foot up to see if it is feasible.

I agree, remaining calm seems paramount.

Makes me think he had Heart attack if he was in pretty good shape like the article says, if he was hanging and conscience seems like he could have got to the tree steps pretty easy...Hate to hear stuff like this, prayers for his family.... frown

I always place the knot on my life line attached to my safety harness up high. If I would fall out I would not have to climb up to get back on, I would just have to put my feet back on platform since my feet are at platform level. If that makes sense.

Makes sense. Keep the tether tight and minimize the drop.

Prayers for the family.

Sorry for the family.

Recommend wearing a harness with a built-in suspension relief strap (and knowing how to use it), and keep the tether to the tree at the shortest length possible, so you don't get below the stand when you fall. I would imagine just falling (even with a harness) could cause a heart attack. That would scare me pretty bad.

Sad situation.

I absolutely refuse to use lock on stands.
I used one just one time in my life long ago on a friend's property and that one experience was enough for me. I hated it. It felt very unsafe, especially the climbing up and down process. And I felt naked and exposed while sitting there too. Like I good just fall out at any moment if I wasn't 100% vigilant of every second.

My friend fell on the way up to one the next week and spent the next ten years of his life paralyzed from the chest down.

He always said lockons were better because they were quieter then double platform tree climbers and you could hide them better way up in the crotch of a tree.
And just use spikes to climb up on.

No thanks.

Prayers for this family.
It won't be a happy new year for them.

Per a family member.

"Official" results wont be out for a week or so but natural causes seems to be what happened. Not a result of the fall or from being suspended by his harness.

He had all his safety equipment on and was in easy reach of the platform and ladder.

Based on this, he could have had a heart attack and then fell from the stand. No matter what, terrible situation and prayers for his family. I hunt alone on public land and that's my biggest fear, something could happen and nobody could get to me in time. I text my wife where I'm going to be and I gave her the GW's number, my truck description and tag number. I also have the GW on speed dial.
