Is this a thing? How often do you change them. I was thinking about putting some new ones in my old truck.

Just put some on my bronco. I figured after 280k it was probably time.

In the past I changed mine more often. Guess I couldn't pass up those cheap rancho 5000's. Loved hearing them work driving to fast up some old skidder trail. Now with sxs and 4 wheeler I only change if I notice I need new ones which I'm overdue for on my truck.

so, related question...............how exactly do you know when "it's time"? Aside from just doing it at set intervals, what are the noticeable symptoms that it's needed?

If you hit a bump the suspension should flex and the shock should absorb the flex, you may still feel it but you shouldn't feel it more than once. If your shocks are worn out you will feel the same bump multiple times.

A new shock will have pressure pushing it extended, an old shock will not.

If it's got over 100k on it then change them, but don't cheap out. Get good shocks and you probably will only have to do it once.

It's really hard to beat a set of Bilsteins.

If your truck looks like a hoopty bouncing down the boulevard...you probably need new shocks.

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I second this...I replaced the factory Ranchos on my 2017 Z71 with 5100 series Bilsteins.
The Ranchos would bounce when I stopped quick. The Bilsteins do not.
I only had about 35K miles on it when I replaced all shocks and struts

I agree, I recently put some on my 2005 2500 and they’re awesome!

Um. Yeah it's a thing. I always replace mine about 80 to 100k.
