May have messed up but I let my chickens out to free range around the yard for the first time this afternoon. They’ve been in the same coop/roost since they were chicks. Will they go back in there on their own when it gets time to go to roost this evening?

yes. Like clockwork around dark they will come back home. We let ours out everyday and late every evening they put themselves up. A friend who has had them a while said that if you keep them in a coop for about a week, that it imprints as home to them. So far he has been 100% correct.

Around here, free-range chickens are dead chickens.
Our local predators love free-range chickens.

Somebody told me the same thing about quail. They (the quail) had never heard of such nonsense apparently because I no longer have quail.

Between the owls, bobcats and fox, the quail probably didn't have a say in the matter.

I have a big Tom barn cat too. Unfortunately they are also chicken predators.

Well Coosa?
Did they go to roost in their own pen? Mine do .
I'm sure they did,if you left the gate open. Shut it after they go to roost.
II forgot to shut the gate a couple weeks ago,and
Something went inside the pen that night and caught one.

Well they did pretty good yesterday and today. Let them out about 4 and all but one got back in the pen. Pretty sure that one is mentally retarded though. She just walks around the pen trying to get in and walks right by the gate. Same chicken both days
