Does anyone have any personal experience with a Mahindra 4550 in 4x4?

I know if I had the extra $400 a month to spare I’d own one.

4540 2wd gear tractor. It’ll run 17 mph in 4 high. 👍

We have a 6010 4x4. Not familiar with the 4550, but may could answer general questions you may have about them.

I use it all the time and can be fairly rough on equipment, It hasn't missed a beat.

Yes and no. It doesn't have a DPF (regeneration type) muffler/filter but it does have a catalytic converter in its muffler. The way they get around having a DPF is they run a significantly higher combustion temperature in the cylinder. That may be a negative trade off or a positive. Time will tell.

If you use a tractor like my grandfather would have taught you to run one they (DPF filters) aren't always a headache. Crank it, let it warm up, then run the engine at or near PTO speed all the time. Go faster or slower with the TRANSMISSION, not the throttle. If you do this, you keep the engine at a semi constant load and speed at operating temperature. The Diesel engine doesn't make nearly as much PM (soot or black smoke) when run this way.

If you use a tractor like some people would a side by side, i.e. DRIVE it out to the mailbox, drive it to the barn, drive it to the pasture, all the while lugging the engine and revving it up and down to speed up and slow down, you'll have problems. When run this way the engine puts out much more PM which is what the DPF filter is made to catch. When you fill it faster it has to clean itself more often and lots of people will not let it clean itself when it needs to. This exacerbates the situation.

My grandfather always told me the same thing. Unless you are using the PTO, use a lower gear and a higher RMP. He said that was the way a tractor was designed to operate.

I know there's a whole lot of Mahindra fans on here and I'm not trying to knock them, but I do have to wonder....

The farmers Co-op in Albertville got a Mahindra dealership and that lasted about a year because they were having so many to repair under warranty and getting the parts to fix them with was next to impossible.

I have a 2538 same tractor as the 2638. Only problem was a bent cylinder on the bucket and that was my fault. I think it is the perfect size for someone that has a piece of property to take care of and hunting club tractor.

I don’t know if they are any better or any worse than anything else. There is a good dealership 5 miles from my house that’s been there a long time. A lot of people around here have them. If you read the tractor forums they all have some problems, and everyone says the dealer is as important as the color of your tractor. Seems everyone that makes tractors skimps on them in one area or another.

Seems like it would meet my needs/wants.

I almost bought the 4550 but got the 5570 instead. The 45 series tractors are tanks and tough as nails. You won’t go wrong. I only went with the 55 series because I preferred the shuttle shift.
