When do they drop around here (northern Alabama)? We have a couple that are plenty mature and loaded. Cleaned out around them this year so just now starting to pay attention to them.

Cleaning around them will make a big difference. I do the same to mine.

From what I've seen....nuts seem to drop really late in N. Alabama if they have any to drop period................especially toward the northwest side..... whistle

We picked some up Thursday night hog hunting. According to Barry they should be or start pouring any day now.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

How hard is it to start a seedling with chestnuts? I’ve got a tree at my grandmothers that’s 40 years old.

If it has a different type of rootstock, planted seeds will go back to the rootstock. Any limb growing below the graft will produce fruit of the rootstock because it is the rootstock. Im not sure about chestnuts but alot of pecan trees are grafted onto other rootstock. It would be something to consider. Pretty interesting subject to delve off into as well.

Your Chestnuts are not likely grafted, especially a 40 year old tree. I'd put some in some lightly moist peat moss, throw in a bag in the bottom of the fridge. Check in 4-6 weeks for sprouts.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I put some in a bag between moist paper towels and stuck in frig. for a few weeks. Then during winter I stuck them in pots outside and covered so squirrels couldn't get them. I now have 20 or so 4 ft tall seedlings to plant this winter.

That’s an oak. He’s talking about actual chestnuts.

I took them and put them in planters and left them outside covered in screen wire. That's about as natural as you can do it. Let nature stratify them. I planted mine about an inch deep, just like a squirrel would have. Keep an eye on them and when they sprout in the spring take off the screen. You can keep them in the planters for a year, if they're 3 gallon. Plant the following fall or winter when they're dormant.
