My grandson bought a nice Ford Platinum a couple of years ago, loves the truck. Three weeks agp he was over at his brother's house and a thunderstorm came up and lightning hit the vehicle next to his and blew a hole in the hood, then the lightning went into his truck and fried the computer. Now the iinsurance company says there are no computers available anywhere and it might be 6 to 8 months to get one built, sounds like BS to me. Can he force them to total the truck? Progressive offered a $33 dollar a month rental.

I have nothing base this on, but that sounds like a load of crap. Not a single compatible replacement computer ANYWHERE?

If you question what they are telling you, call a couple Ford dealers and give the parts guy the vin number and what you need. He can tell you if there are any out there.

And this.

It's weird to me that the insurance company concerns themselves with this?? Seems like that should be the body shop's business, and the insurance company just pays for it. Is the body shop telling them they can't find one? I find it pretty much impossible that the nearest Ford dealership can't have one next day (unless Progressive refuses to use new parts, or requires only specific repair facilities to work on the truck)

We were on the edge of Eternia, when the power of Greyskull began to take hold.

The insurance company wouldn’t be the one telling him that. It would be the dealership/mechanic. Insurance companies don’t dictate where you get your vehicle fixed.

Your problem is most likely just Progressive. Either way, it should be easy to figure out

1. look at the estimate and see if they figured a new Ford part, or a used one.

2. Call the dealership and see if a new PCM is on backorder or not.

But you still have 100% your own choice. Just may end up being more of a headache but I'd rather use someone I know instead of who they recommend and I've always been able to no matter the insurance company.

Do not repair a lightning struck vehicle, you will regret it until you finally turn it loose

I wouldn't trust the ford dealership in FWB to stick my trailer ball into the reciever and properly install the pin. There's not a single real mechanic in that shop. At least that is the way it was last time I was in there six or seven years ago trying to get something fixed under warranty on my transfer case. Maybe it has changed but I doubt it.

Insurance companies have databases of parts, so they could likely tell there was going to be a problem. It is not their fault the part is not available. Nor is it their responsibility to compensate for it not being available. That is not one of the coverages paid for under the policy. They should pay the maximum rental coverage but that's just 30 days. This is Ford's problem. Why don't they have replacement parts for a new vehicle?

Google it. I've been told such nonsense and went online and ordered one 6 min later.

Most people don't know this though.

Don't give Progressive the benefit of the doubt. Even if this isn't on them , a million other things would be they are terrible.

I’d be pissed! I know people that have body shops and they say to stay with Alfa or State Farm. I’ve had nothing but pleasant for the most part dealings thru State Farm.

This is why you need to have good insurance like Alfa.
