I knew it was a BIG explosion.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

"Hey where should we store the sodium or ammonium nitrate we seized?" "I think the fireworks warehouse would be great".

I could step out the door of my office and hit the Hunt Refinery in Tuscaloosa with a rock. I was told on the day I started working here that if I hear alarms going off inside the plant, jump in your truck and LEAVE. A guy who works for me later followed up and told me not to waste my time, if I hear sirens, just get comfortable, you can't get far enough away in time. Hope it never goes up. If so, it's been nice knowing ya.

I remember the Hercules facility in Bessemer going bang. Halloween night unless I'm mistaken. We were close enough it shattered windows.

If it's just raw ammonium nitrate like they are claiming... then how does the gas pressure get high enough to cause that big of an explosion?

On a ship it's because it is in the cargo hold. Ammonium Nitrate doesn't just "blow up" from fire.

IMO - Looked like ordinance cooking off to me. I would say this is what happens when you store rockets you got from Iran next to a huge pile of ammonium nitrate. Be advised. Not a good idea.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I saw this morning where there was so much ammonium nitrate that exploded (2,750 tons) that it was the equivalent blast to a tactical nuke.

Who thought it would be a good idea to store that confiscated stuff next to a fireworks factory?

6.06 million pounds in a pile can create it's own reaction over time.

As ammonium nitrate is a salt, both the cation, NH4+, and the anion, NO3-, may take part in chemical reactions.

Solid ammonium nitrate decomposes on heating. At temperatures below ca. 300 C the decomposition is mainly to nitrous oxide and water:

NH4NO3 → N2O + 2H2O

At higher temperatures, the following reaction predominates:

2NH4NO3 → 2N2 + O2 + 4H2O

Both decomposition reactions are exothermic. Consequently, when the mass of ammonium nitrate is greater than the critical mass the decomposition is explosive. Many ammonium nitrate disasters, with loss of lives, have occurred. The brown, red and/or orange colour in an explosion cloud is due to nitrogen dioxide, a secondary reaction product.

I will be very surprised if the number of dead is below 15 thousand.

so that's really interesting. What would be more devious is if a bad actor planned to have their cargo seized, stored in this facility and for that breakdown to occur in hopes of destroying the Port of Beirut for some future attack we have yet to see.

Could be possible I suppose but the gain from it escapes me. There are no targets Russia or Iran would have in my opinion in that locale. Hezbollah has a large presence and they are basically allies with both.

Lebanon itself is too weak to pose a threat to anyone and basically has no alliances with anyone.

Video from adjacent rooftop

This is what I saw sounding like a mass of fireworks igniting then the big one. I think the blast at end isn’t the really big one. Here’s a link to where I think the video was shot from on top of a small building just to the west of the warehouse. Rooftop with leaning pole

"Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate had been stored for six years at a warehouse in the port of Beirut without safety measures.

The head of Lebanon's customs authority said he had sent six memos to the country's judiciary warning that substances being stored in the port were dangerous to the public."

That's 6.06 million pounds in a leaky warehouse. It becomes more reactive when between 5 and 10 percent water is present (not stronger - just more likely to degrade catastrophically).

It looks like a terrible accident that was completely preventable.

They never should have offloaded the AN if they weren't going to immediately sell it to fertilizer suppliers.
It is amazing that it sat there for 6 years in a warehouse and no one did anything about it. And many were warning for
years that it could blow up the city.

And I'm pretty sure they were already dealing with a serious food shortage to begin with. They said that grain elevator was the largest one in the country
