looking for a 308 Bolt Action. just getting started in Bolt Action so the type bolt isn't really important at this point, same with all the other various mechanics. I'll actually want to get more than a couple of these so I can compare what I like.

stock material isn't important, the only real important thing (aside from price) is 26 inch barrel or longer. don't need a scope, I have several. something in the $500 +/- range? no need to drop $1k+ until I know..

anyone have one they want to discuss?

Your going to have a hard time finding a 26" barrel on most rifles without it being a custom. Most hunting style rifles are going to have a 20"-24" barrel some Magnums will have a 26". And a custom for $500 is gonna be real tough

Since you ask....It’s a rem 783 and cost $525.

This would be a much better option- https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/remington-model-700-adl-varmint-bolt-action-rifle

I’d much rather have a howa 1500 or a Rem 700 w/ a 26” barrel.

Another good option to consider is to screw on a 26” “remage” Barrel of your choice to a rem 700 action. If you already have a rem 700 with a 308 bolt face then you could accomplish this for under $500. If not, you could source a cheap 700 and be into for less than $800 and have a “semi-custom” rifle with a premium a barrel w/ a contour and twist of your preference.

If you don’t mind me asking, why must it be a 308 with a 26” or longer barrel?

You're only as good as your worst shot-

Savage 12FV at Cabelas/Bass Pro is a 26" barrel and less than $500. Thanksgiving-Christmas they can usually be had for about $300.

26 inches is a personal preference based on some research, discussing with family (freaking avid hunters) and some guns I already own. 308 because I already have 2 AR-10 with well over 5k rds of ammo. no need to get some strange caliber that I have to stock up on rds in this day and age...

I found these already in the $500-600 range, all with 26 inch Barrels..

Rem 700 SPS - available PSA
Win XPR hunter - Available multiple places
Rem 783 - Available multiple places
Browning AB3 stalker - this one is out of stock everywhere

if I can buy face to face that is always preferred, plus I kinda figured a decent used gun I might save a few $$. if it get's too hard I'll flex, I'm just asking...

Understood- Just don’t expect “bolt action accuracy” with bulk 308 ammo

Depending on what "type" of hunting you are doing, a 26 inch barrel is either overkill on length or more of a hassle to wrangle in the woods with a tree stand. I have a bergara ridge in .308 with an 18 inch barrel and it is probably my favorite bolt gun currently. Shoots under 1 MOA as guaranteed from bergara. It'll run in the 750$ range but to me it is hard to beat the quality compared with the price. I'd take it any day over a cheaper Remington these days.

I don't own a Creedmoor, but this is a great article why a 26" may not be practical and even less than 18" can get it done without all that weight and size and accurate out to 1000yds.
