Geno on second thought for quail, just raise the bush hog up and go buy em like i do, save your time 😀

Disclaimer: I do plant for em in hopes of a better population but I won't kill a wild bird if I happen to flush some but its been a while since that happened

Round up and let sit a month or do and plant it and watch for rain and fertilize

Early successional habitat is the limiting factor for quail. If you spray, disc or plant your only early successional habitat you’re taking away the only thing they have. What’s the surrounding timber look like? Thinned, frequently burned? If you’re doing this for quail leave the natural structure in your fields alone. You’ll not help them one bit this time of year by taking it away. Plant your fall plots in September/October.

Speak english for dummies please Mr. Brock.

40 acres of super thick pines with vines of every sort (visibility is 3 feet) 15-20 feet high. Fields are 1/2 acre each, long and narrow. Had planned to plant the roadsides as well about 30 feet out on each side. Surrounded on three sides by active cattle operations with open short fields over 200 acres each and on one side with open mixed mature timber that is 1500 acres.

We own the land so no worries about manipulating the growing stock.

Early succession = habitat that consists of various grasses, forbs, legumes and flowering plants that provide quail cover and protection from predators and foods they need in order to survive. It sounds like the surrounded habitat is not ideal for quail. The 1/2 acre native grass openings is far more beneficial to them in mid to late summer than anything you will plant.

You are wasting time and money planting anything right now. Nothing you can plant will help the birds. Better off just cutting some areas.

Genius. I may have to try that.
