Also, everyone's situation is different and I couldn't raise a family on my farms income alone. I'm very thankful to have a wife that is employed.

It was a lot better 10 year ago, whole different ballgame now One of my best friends family built 16 houses several years ago. They started on the chickens because the family was spreading out and profitable jobs were needed for the families eating from the same farm. They used the chicken litter for the row crop areas they have and were pleased. I heard many times him tell me the chicken houses saved the farm and kept them in groceries. Now, about 15 years later, all the houses are sitting vacant. Upgrades and being told how to run the houses were their turn offs. They are still row crop farming and the houses look practically new just sitting there gathering dust. I always hoped one of the family members would start them back but they haven't yet. It took millions to build all these houses. I just can't see pulling the plug and letting them sit. B
I can't stand a thief.

Watch "Super Size me 2: Holy Chicken". It's a movie/ documentary that exposes some of the bad sides of the poultry industry. Add "Rotten" to that list.

Thanks for all of the comments. Just looking at some ways to diversify. I own several dental offices across the state along with a lot of commercial real estate. I don't need completely passive, but the whole goal is to reduce the load a stress I have now. Sounds like this is not the avenue I don't want to just by myself another job. As a kid living in Graham, AL, I'm plenty familiar with the smell. I've spent many hours cleaning out houses between loads for extra cash. We also had no AC and a big attic fan. When the cattle farmers would spread their fields with chicken droppings, it would fill our house with that smell for a few days.

Invest in a tattoo removal business. I think there will be a big market for that in the near future.

Interesting thread. I always thought it was a shame the way that the processors took control of the chicken business long ago and completely put the little guy out of business.
I know nothing of the current rules and laws regarding poultry. Is it legal for a small time guy to raise chickens and sell them directly to the public now? I have heard rumors of small farmers selling "food baskets" with fresh fruit and vegetables and also fresh chicken. I have doubted that the chicken part of it was legal, but I really don't know.

Check out this farm. http://www.polyfacefarms.com/ It is owned by a guy named Joel Salatin. He has some very good podcast about returning to self sustainable agriculture. Her grows, processes, and sells his own chicken, pork, beef, and vegetables. It's very interesting. He rotates fields almost daily, the animals naturally fertilize, and he doesn't use weed killers or pesticides.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.
