I’m curious to know if anyone on here is feeding protein on their property on serious level? If so are you committed to keeping feeders full 365 days per year of feed? I suspect there are folks in state that are feeding on this level consistency, but will be surprised if there are many on here. I’d also be curious to know if your aren’t feeding on this level if you personally know anyone that is.
I consistently keep (1) 1000# free choice feeder full 365 days a year. We also maintain 10 or so protein feeders on our club, however we do not feed during turkey season. My issue is I can not find a premium feed available locally that checks all the boxes of what I’d like to see in a feed. I want a feed that has a high TDN, provides optimal protein, minerals and vitamins along with a yeast for digestive health. It also needs to be a highly desired feed that is consumed daily. Most deer breeders have a custom blend they feed that has what I’m looking for but it’s not available to the public.

During the summer months my deer get whatever mother nature provides. They always prefer that anyway. Keep a desirable habitat and they will come.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Are you not happy with the "Buck Chum" anymore ? That is what I’m currently feeding. It’s not that I’m not happy with it but if I had a feed that checked all the boxes on my list I’d switch. Buck Chum is a quality feed but not what I’d call a premium feed if that makes sense. It lacks the minerals, vitamins and yeast. I’m supplementing minerals via licks but I rather it be in a feed. Check out Double Down deer feed when you get chance. It is what id consider a premium deer feed but it’s not available anywhere close to us. I’ll be feeding it on my Oklahoma lease in the near future once everything is in place and fenced. Might have to start hauling me a pallet or two back home

Mark I’m satisfied with my quality of browse on the club due to the prescribe burn program our timber company offers. It’s definitely a huge advantage in growing quality deer. Honestly our budget doesn’t allow for us to feed full scale like a south Texas ranch. We budget in a little extra money to feed small scale throughout the year. We also plant clover plots which offer some great nutrition. I’m of the opinion if I’m going to spend money on feed I’d like for it to check all the boxes. At my house I maintain a 2 acre clover/chicory plot 365 days a year on top of a summer plot of beans/peas, sun hemp and sun flowers. I also keep a protein feeder full 365 days a year. It’s just something I enjoy doing and really like seeing them grow.

I'm not, but my business partner's club started right after turkey season on a year round free choice protein program. 10 protein feeders on 5000 acres with a corn timed feeder at each feed site. I can ask what they are feeding. A deer manager from Texas set them up is all I know. He did tell me the deer still weren't really on them yet. Yes sir I’d be curious to know what he’s feeding.

It’s just something I enjoy doing and really like seeing them grow. I have a perennial clover plot behind my house. Also have a big cut over, with a big creek and pond, and a peach orchard. I try to keep a rotating area of heavy cover, browse and water available.

There....is that better?

The local deer herd has been living large on my purple hull peas the last couple of weeks. Seems like they don't want me to have any at all.
