Doing some remodeling and built cedar shutters for my house. Now I want to replace my metal columns. Thinking cedar but it is extremely expensive. Any suggestions? I need three 6-6 columns 9 feet approximately long.

Could you use some other type of wood and finish cedar planks of the appropriate size to it to make a fake, but real looking cedar post? Not sure if it cuts down cost, just an idea.

The cost is not much different if I skin with cedar.

I'm guessing you don't want pressure treated pine? That's obviously the cheapest.

Use pressure treated and wrap them with cedar or whatever you want for looks. Solid posts are going to warp ,check, split or twist.

When you say metal, do you mean tube steel or just painted aluminum stuff?

Try Olympic brand stain, Kona brown color stain on pressure treated posts.

Not sure why you want to replace metal with wood

Why don't you just wrap the metal columns,..
I've done a lot of them. You can get PVC and be done with it

Yup. PVC won't crack, termite proof and doesn't require attention unlike wood.

Tired of my metal columns and trying to go a little more rustic with the place.

Leave metal posts and box them in with wood. That's what I'm planning on doing. Not sure what type of wood yet.

PVC is the devil.
Wrap the columns in cedar or cypress.
Kona stain is fantastic.

Sounds like you found something. Otherwise why not just cut some 8 to 10 inch cedar logs out of a fence row.
