My wife and i just had gotten into bed. we were both almost asleep and sort of half dozed off. that's when we heard a woman talking downstairs but couldn't understand. it was totally dark, TV was off and it's just the 2 of us living there. i reached into the nightstand for the pistol.... but changed my mind. grabbed the AR with the light and red dot. i headed downstairs naked with the AR. Haha. swept the whole house. it 100% was a woman's voice in my house.
I found nothing.
It turns out the Roomba had an error and was complaining. Haha. At least i found out how i would feel and react.... how good my plan is.... and how good my skills are at sweeping the house safely. it needs some tweaks. thinking about, planning, or even training in your own house is one thing. it's pretty different when you actually think it's real. And much more reflection on the mistakes and holes in the plan.

I had a similar situation a couple years back, but what I heard (and what the killer attack dog heard) was a footstep in the foyer... I was at home by myself sitting in my recliner, and Killer Attack Dog was on the sofa beside me. The tv was off, and I hear a footstep in the foyer. What got me was the dog heard it too. Then he (killer attack dog) looks back at me with this “ your own your on” look on his face (typical, he’s all bark and no bite most of the time). Anyway, I get up, draw the 9mm on my side, and ease around to see what’s there. Nothing. Just the house settling I reckon. But it sounded just like a person taking a step on hardwood floors with a crawl space underneath. Oh well, never found the bad guy, all doors were locked, etc. Who knows. But I always carry, and only had to reach to my side on that occasion to fill my hands with a pistol. That was nice to be ready instantly.
Jesus... I hope you know Him personally like I do.

You might consider getting a vest that you can put a plate in. in the dark, if you have a light, you are the best target. store the vest with the AR, Look for one with crotch protection too.

A couple of years back... There was a loud bang ( think gunshot outside of your window- or explosives very near by) right around midnight or so. Immediately I hear a vehicle speeding off. I jumped out of bed grabbed the AR and perimeter checked out of my windows. I see a Lady in front of my house..in the road..kinda kneeling or bent over. I thought maybe she was hurt. I go outside and ease down the driveway. Turned out it was my neighbor from across the Street. She was the Principal at Scottsboro High School and some students had put some kind of explosive in her mailbox. It was a total loss. Blown to smithereens. At the same time another neighbor, who was investigating the noise walked up. Big Black Guy. He saw my AR and told me he's glad to know I'm in the neighborhood.
It all happened so Quick that I had just slipped on my boots that were by the door..never did put on a pants or a shirt. There I was, standing in the middle of the road in Underwear and work boots toting and AR15 with the Retired Principal and some other guy that I had never met as the cop pulled up....... That lady must have like what she saw. I see her doing the double take every time she see's me outside now.
The fool tells me his reasons; the wise man persuades me with my own.

first off, you need a dog. Size isn't as important as if they'll bark. Learning to read your dogs body language is important. Do your sweeping in daytime, and refine your method.
I got 3 dogs inside, my oldest dog sleeps in the room with me and the wife (He's got some hound and pit in him). He doesn't get along with my red nose and will jump on him so i keep them separated. The red nose and another large dog sleeps in the living room. We put a baby gate at the hallway, so one of the living room dogs doesn't get outside the bedroom door and cause the bedroom dog to start growling. Anyways, a couple of weeks ago, just before i fell asleep, i heard an unusual bump. I figured i might as well check it out, grabbed the pistol and opened the bedroom door enough i could see the biggest dog in the living room, she was standing up looking down the hallway at me hassling. Usually she's asleep in the chair, so i know something is up. While I'm standing there trying to figure out whats going on, the bedroom door flies open, and hits me(this was all of 2 seconds after i opened the door). Luckily before i freak out and start blasting i feel the dog brush against my leg. I try to grab him before i have to separate some fighting dogs. Gun goes flying, dog gets pat me. Wife wakes up and starts saying "its alright, its alright" The dog runs to the side of the bed (bedroom dog is under the bed, thats usually were he sleeps). I about tackle the gun safe (a bunch of mags and a couple of pistols fall of the top shelf of gun safe) trying to grab him before he tries to go under the bed.
So after the calamity i realize what happened. It was thundering, living room dogs get nervous. The red nose pushed the baby gate out of the way and curled up outside the bedroom door. We keep a 4x4 post outside the door so the dogs doesn't fight under the door (thats a whole nother story) when he layed down the 4x4 bumped up against the door (thats why it was an unusual bump). The scaredy cat bout knocked me down with the door, trying to get in the bedroom as soon as the door opened. What a mess right at bed time.

Ist night with the Roomba many years ago was met with the Winchester Defender. It wasnt the voice it was the bumping around down stairs.

Sherriff deputy did a sweep in mine last year. Daughter and I went to the store. They were looking for a guy that had ran. Garage entrance door was unlocked. Found my wife just getting out of the shower. Scared the heck out of her. I have swept it a couple times.
