As I recall, Karen is a real person and became an internet meme sensation when she did something really nosy and busibodied like called the police because she took her dog to the dog park and another person's dog was trying to hunch on it or something really stupid like that. Someone filmed it when the police arrived and she wanted to press Dog Rape charges. Someone took a meme from the video and it went viral.

This may not be the exact birth of Karen the Unban Legend, but the above incident did occur and I saw the video when it came out, and Karen became synonymous with being a nosy tattletale around the same time. For some reason I've always connected the two.
