If you are smart and resourceful, living off grid can have all the comforts of home.

Irishguy. Your cabin set up is kind of what I’m talking about. I’m definitely thinking that having 10 acres or more with a small house or cabin in the middle of it is the way to go.

We don't have our's off grid, but I could do that with a little money and ingenuity. Putting together a solar system large enough to be totally off grid is certainly doable. I think on our cabin I could build a solar system and put in a well for about $20k. I could save some if I decided to put together a larger rainwater collection system there are tons of folks out west and on small islands that only use rain water collected from their roofs and store it in cisterns

The thing about up here is power and water combined only cost us about $100 to $150 a month on the worst months of the summer. So it's hard to justify spending that kind of money to eliminate basically $100 a month in utilities. It would take me probably 18 years to amortize that kind of expenditure. .

Now on the other hand if you were way out in the woods, getting power out there could get pricey.

We do plan on eventually (When we move up here full time.) having a large garden, canning and putting up stuff to where we are providing most of our own food year round.

This Friday I'm going to look at a small piece of land. We'll see what comes of it.

Having a small green field, shooting range and eventually, maybe a house on it would be extremely nice.

I need to figure out how to put a shooting range up here somewhere. Even if it's only 50 yards.

I would love to get 400yds as the goal.

Phase 1 range would be a simple 100yd range with a large wood spool for the bench.
Phase 2 range would be 400 yards or so with a small carport for shade and a concrete shooting bench.

We have a nice spring running by the house. It looks to 50 gpm of flow and its year around. One day I hope to put in a micro hyro system. With that I can make electricity 24/7.

Started seriously considering this. It'd be nice to have an easily isolated place totally off the grid.
