The Gulf State Park Pier is closed indefinitely for repairs and improvement(observation deck). I spend a lot of time on the pier when we visit the gulf.

Other than the pier and surf fishing, I haven't ventured out anywhere else down there.

Where are some other places I need to consider taking my kids to fish while in Gulf Shore/OB area?

The pompano and whiting bite has been great this year. Go to any public beach in Orange beach or gulf shores. Go down fort morgan road and look on the left side of the road starting around 7 miles down I think. Look for Mobile street or veterans drive. They have some good spots at the end of the road. Go to the end of fort morgan road just before you enter the fort on the left. There is an old half paved road. That is a great spot. Fish at daylight if you can for best results. Use a small piece of peeled fresh dead shrimp. I was told that the pink colored fish bites you get from Walmart have been producing results as well. I'll be down there this Sat through Tuesday somewhere Perdido Pass.

If you have a big surf rod, make you a fluorocarbon leader with 20 lb test. Make it about 5 feet long. On the end put a pyramid weight heavy enough to hold it down based on surf conditions. Come up from the end about 12 inches and tie in a 1/0 circle hook. Come up another 12 inches and tie in another 1/0 circle hook. Come up anther 18-24 inches and tie it into your line with a swivel. Bait it with peeled shrimp or fish bites and throw it out as far as you can. The Pompano have been running out sometimes past the first or second sandbar. A guy I know just told me this three days ago and he has been wearing them out. I hope to get them next week. Good Luck.

Who's brain-dead idea was it to close the pier during the busiest time of year? That work should've been done in Dec/January...

It was planned for the first quarter, all permits were in place then NOAA decided at the last minute they wanted a study done to see if turtles would be harmed due to screws a scrap falling into the water. Took the state several months to make them happy. I was in on a few of these meetings.

Thanks for the spots to try out

And yes, I'm sure it's Chucky's fault!

If you want to catch a lot of fish that you can eat, you can go to Alabama point and fish off the wall. Just take a light and hang it over the wall to draw bait fish. The last time I did that, we caught at least a hundred blue fish, and probably 200 white trout. The white trout are good to eat, and used to be no limit. I don't know now, if that is true now. Blackened white trout is very good.

I should have mentioned that we would throw a net on the bait fish under light, and get a half of a five gallon bucket full of LY minnows.
