Looking for a good little Toyota 4x4 pickup in decent shape, between 1990-1999 preferably, something with a 5 speed and a 4 cylinder but will consider a v6 as well

Just FYI but be careful of any 3.0 V6's. The newer 3.4 is fine. Don't remember when the change was made from one to the other. 3.0's were famous for head gasket problems.

Late 95 when they went to the Tacoma was a 3.4 the Toyota pickup from 88-95 would be a 3.0, 95 was a split year in ex early 95nwas Toyota pickup 95.5 was a Tacoma. The change over year in the 4runners was 96 they have 3.4 and 88-95 had a 3.0 if they had the v6. The start of the Tacoma in 95.5 was also the first for 2.4L 2rz and 2.7L 3rz for the 4cyl options instead of the 22r carburerated and 22re fuel injected and 22ret fuel injected turbo.

I've had several Tacomas and they are fine , tough machines, the 2.7 engine was a marked improvement over the old 22R and they were fine power plants. I've always been partial to 98 and 99.

You sure it's a 89 with a 3.4?

Got ya, how's the exhaust ran? Manual or auto trans? Do you know if they put the Trans and T case that came with the 3.4 in it? I've seen a couple of trucks and runners that had the 3.0 swapped to a 4 cylinder but never seen a 3.4 in one.

89 was the first year of the 5th generation. It would have come with a 2.4 L 22RE I4 or a 3.0 L 3VZ-E V6. At that time the US had outlawed asbestos head gaskets. Toyota did not get the head bolt torque right with the new gasket material on the 3.0 so they had a lot of head gasket failures after 100,000 miles. The exception was 88 and some 89 3.0's that had different head gaskets and did not have the problem. That being said the 3.0 was not a bad engine,It just did not have that much more power and torque than thelighter 22RE. The 3.0 got horrible gas mileage and was slow especially with the automatic transmission. The 3.4 is the popular swap when your 3.0 dies. The 3.4 is a good engine and makes 40 to 50 HP more than the 3.0. In 91 I bought a 4x4 X-Cab with 5spd then in 94 SR5 X-cab with auto. The 94 was slow, thirsty, and It would barely pull my boat out of the water. 12,000 miles later I solved that problem with the new 97 F150. Fortunately I sold both my 3.0's long before they got to 100,000 miles.
