From what I've learned about Birmingham is as far South as you can find them.

I've never found them in Birmingham area. Furtherest south I've ever found them is Kentucky. Not saying they couldn't be further south, just listing my experience.

Know for a fact they're in Jackson County . There's a website that tracks them. Of course the earliest found is in the South. There's a lady in Cullman Co that is usually the first to find them.

When I go to Oklahoma during first week of April I can fill as many bags as I can bring back. I stomped my creekbottom down in Pickens county last spring looking and never found any . Doubt you’ll have them down that far south

Farmer I lease from in Illinois said when I went up there to spring turkey hunt I could shoot all the turkeys I wanted but I better not take any shrooms. Never looked for them.
Fried some up for us. I don’t see the big deal.
That was always my dad's rule. You could come on our place to shoot turkeys or deer, but mushrooms were off limits. We were pretty serious mushroom hunters. I don't mind sharing them out of the fryer but that doesn't mean you can pick them. For newbys always pinch them off at the ground. Never take the "roots." That's worse than making a play on someone's wife.

I like mushrooms and have never had a Morel. I want to try some one day. I find mushrooms in the woods all the time but don't trust my knowledge enough to eat any I've found. Maybe Lion's Mane if I found some. Those are pretty distinctive and hard to mistake. I'm told they are excellent eating.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

As far as morels, they are pretty safe because no other mushrooms really look like them. Now, false morels (red ones) are really tasty too, but some people will get sick from them even when standing in the room where they are cooked. So, being careful is a good idea. BTW, I love false morels and have eaten them since I was little. Chantelle, hen and chicken of the woods, oyster, and Elkhorn are also great. Stay away from the LBMs or little brown mushrooms because they are just too difficult to tell.between the poisonous and edible ones.

I've never heard of finding them here other than N Alabama.

Just to make it easy do your searching around dead hardwood trees. I don't agree with that, but I know that is a method. The underlying species that produces morel mushrooms is a root fungus. But, the carbohydrates in roots are quickly consumed following death. Looking around dying or recently dead trees makes some since because the root fungus is likely a contributing factor in decline. But, long dead standing trees wouldn't be where I would focus. Live trees are my go to. If you can find an area that has experienced flooding or fire disturbance sux months to a year prior would also be a good area to start. Tree species to focus on would be elms, oaks, sycomore, Ash, and even persimmon. Ground Temp and moisture are the most important variables. If you find morels take the water that you wash them in and pour it in a good spot at your house. It is nice to release the spores and create a little mushroom garden.
