seems like I remember there was a specific motor in some of the older 4runners and maybe the pickups that was pretty consistently bad, but can't figure out which one it was. Anyone know which older Toyota engines in the 4runners and/or pickups that should be avoided?

Crazy thing is i had one and drove it for 7 years, sold it to my nephew, he drove it for 2 years then sold it after he graduated. Only major things i had replaced was fuel pump, power steering pump and rear drive shaft.

Not the 2.4 in my 98' Tacoma. It's been a model of reliability.

In perspective, that is a pretty good product when we are talking about the negative in something that is 25-32 years old.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Replace the head gasket and your good to go. However in the 4 Runner it was badly underpowered

had a '92 that the entire head and gasket was replaced, due to warping, by Toyota...to be fair, I did treat it like a farm truck. pulled many a trailer load of seed and chems during planting, as well as dragging a full 1000 gallon water tank around. sold it shortly after the replacement was done.

underpowered is an understatement!!

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

3.0 had more problems than head gaskets. The exhaust crosses from right to left side over the top behind the heads causing excessive heat on the heads. Bad design. Every now and then you hear of one running 200 - 300k without any engine trouble , but not many.

Yep, nothing like the old 20r/22r/22re ETC. I still have a BUNCH of those trucks sitting at my buddies house from the rock crawler days. Back then we would buy every 84-85 extra cab we could find to make crawlers out of. Really need to find a toyota guru with a lot of money and move that whole pile. I dont even know how many engines, trans and 3rd members we have. If you buy a 3.0 truck with a bad engine and want to swap a 22re into it let me know I have a lot of harnesses and computers also.
