I'm looking at a Stihl Model MS 261C. Gonna run me about 700 bones when all said and done. Anyone familiar with this saw ? I'm going to be using it on pines and hardwoods, probably half day once a week.

I was going between this one and the Farm Boss. dealer hashed out the differences and the biggest that got me was the weight between the two. even though the Farm Boss is 271, the 261 will pull just as hard and it weighs less...big plus when it is used for more than an hour! I also like the compression override when starting cold. the only time it has let me down was my fault...ran it through a nail/screw, early in the day. and dulled the chain badly. loooong day cutting, when I should've just gone after a new chain.

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I own that particular model saw.

It is a beast.

You will be amazed at the rpms it will turn compared to a homeowner model.

Fine saw.

Take care of it and you should get a lifetime of use from it.

Farm boss is heavy, I replaced a husky rancher 255 with a farm boss. The rancher was lighter and easier to use but the huskys are not what they once were. I use my kobalt 44v pole saw way more than I do the farm boss. Cutting 6-8" oak limbs with the kobalt is easy-peasy

Anything Still is top shelf, IMHO. I have a MS291 and need hellium balloons attached to it to help me with the weight. Seems like it weighs about 13lbs with the 18" bar but it a cutting SOB.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I have a couple of the 026 and ms260 units. The 261 is the newer model of those, with more epa regulations. Mine run great, very much a different beast from a homeowner saw. MUCH faster cut, and pretty lightweight. These are not the big powerhouse saws that the 036's are but as long as you keep the bar length reasonable it will be a great saw. My brother in law is a stihl dealer and he recommends a 16" bar on these. I use an 18 because I am tall and it helps me do more limbing without bending down as often. Mine do fine with an 18, but if you bury it in an oak log you can tell a difference. Chain speed is where these saw shine. keep the rpms up and they will throw some chips.

My MS362 is a beast. Best saw money can buy for regular use in my opinion, only bested by the 441 or 462

Not sure about the 261 but I have owned several 362's and they have been good saws.
